Discovery of nearby devices for file transfer and other communications

A wireless communication device comprising:

• wireless circuitry configured to transmit and receive data in accordance with a first wireless communication protocol and in accordance with a second wireless communication protocol;
• and
• a processor coupled to the wireless circuitry, the processor configured to execute software to control the wireless communication device to:
• while a second portion of the wireless circuitry operates in a power-reduced state:
• scan for messages using a first portion of the wireless circuitry in accordance with the first wireless communication protocol;
• determine whether a message, received via the first portion of the wireless circuitry from a second wireless communication device, includes one or more fields containing values that satisfy a set of matching filter criteria, including a manufacturing identification field having a value for the second wireless communication device that matches a corresponding manufacturing identifier for the wireless communication device and;
• when the values for the one or more fields satisfy the set of matching filter criteria:
• extract a set of encrypted user identification values associated with the second wireless communication device from the message;
• and
• compare the set of encrypted user identification values extracted from the message to a local set of encrypted user identification values associated with the wireless communication device;
• and
• when a first encrypted user identification value, in the set of encrypted user identification values extracted from the message, matches a second encrypted user identification value in the local set of encrypted user identification values:
• transition the second portion of the wireless circuitry from the power-reduced state to an active state;
• and
• establish a connection to the second wireless communication device in accordance with the second wireless communication protocol.

A non-transitory computer readable storage device configured to store software thereon, the software that, when executed by a processor, causes a second wireless communication device to:

• while a second portion of wireless circuitry of the second wireless communication device operates in a power-reduced state:
• receive a message from a first wireless communication device, via a first portion of the wireless circuitry using a first wireless communication protocol, the message including:
• a manufacturing identifier value for the first wireless communication device,
• an indicator of a particular communication service requested by the first wireless communication device and,
• one or more user identification values associated with the first wireless communication device in one or more fields of the message;
• when (i) the manufacturing identifier value for the first wireless communication device matches a corresponding manufacturing identifier for the second wireless communication device and (ii) the second wireless communication device supports the particular communication service, compare the one or more user identification values in the one or more fields in the message to a local set of user identification values stored in non-volatile storage;
• and
• when a user identification value in the one or more user identification values matches a corresponding user identification value in the local set of user identification values:
• transition the second portion of the wireless circuitry from the power-reduced state to an active state;
• and
• establish a connection to the first wireless communication device, using a second wireless communication protocol, and
• communicate with the wireless communication device according to the particular communication service.
