Abstract
A water treatment device and methods of treating water such as cooling tower water, swimming pool water, and hot tub or spa water, are described. The water treatment device utilizes ultraviolet radiation, a magnetic field, and ozone fortified air to treat the water, typically resulting in reduced microbial contamination and reduced alkalinity in cooling tower water. Cooling tower water may consequently be run at higher cycles of concentration while reducing or eliminating deposition of minerals on cooling tower components. Swimming pool water and hot tub water treated with the water treatment device typically requires less chlorine, and chlorine levels are typically more stable than without the device.
Claims20
A method for treating water, comprising:
- providing a treatment device, having:
- a treatment chamber housing with an inner surface that defines an interior volume, the treatment chamber housing having an inlet and an outlet;
- an ultraviolet radiation source located within the interior volume of the treatment chamber housing, wherein an annular space is formed between an outer surface of the ultraviolet radiation source and the inner surface of the treatment chamber housing;
- a plurality of magnets located within the interior volume of the treatment chamber housing, wherein the magnets are arrayed along at least a first line;
- a gas pump operatively interconnected to the inlet of the treatment chamber housing;
- introducing, by the gas pump, an oxygen-containing gas stream into the interior volume of the treatment chamber housing through the inlet;
- moving the oxygen-containing gas stream through the annular space and contacting the oxygen-containing gas stream with ultraviolet radiation produced by the ultraviolet radiation source and magnetic fields produced by the plurality of magnets to form a treated oxygen-containing gas stream;
- and
- expelling the treated oxygen-containing gas stream out of the interior volume of the treatment chamber housing through the outlet, and contacting a water stream with the treated oxygen-containing gas stream to form a treated water stream.
A method for treating water, comprising:
- providing a treatment device, having:

- an ultraviolet radiation source located within the interior volume of the treatment chamber housing, wherein an annular space is formed between an outer surface of the ultraviolet radiation source and the inner surface of the treatment chamber housing;
- a plurality of permanent magnets located within the interior volume of the treatment chamber housing, wherein the magnets are arrayed along at least a first line, and the polarities of the magnets arrayed along the at least the first line are such that a first permanent magnet attracts a second permanent magnet;
- introducing an oxygen-containing gas stream into the interior volume of the treatment chamber housing through the inlet;
- moving the oxygen-containing gas stream through the annular space and contacting the oxygen-containing gas stream with ultraviolet radiation produced by the ultraviolet radiation source and magnetic fields produced by the plurality of permanent magnets to form a treated oxygen-containing gas stream;
- and
- expelling the treated oxygen-containing gas stream out of the interior volume of the treatment chamber housing through the outlet, and contacting a water stream with the treated oxygen-containing gas stream to form a treated water stream.
