Abstract
The present invention relates to homogeneous sulfur-modified polymer compositions, methods related thereto and an asphaltic concrete mixture.
Claims10
A method of preparing a homogeneous sulfur-modified polymer for use with asphaltic concrete for improving properties relative to rutting and emissions, the method comprising the steps of:
- (i) pyrolyzing a saturated hydrocarbon polymer to produce an unsaturated hydrocarbon polymer and acetic acid, the acetic acid being removed from the unsaturated hydrocarbon polymer thereafter, such that the hydrocarbon unsaturated polymer is free of acetic acid;
- and
- (ii) reacting elemental sulfur with the unsaturated hydrocarbon polymer with a reaction time of less than about 20 minutes through cross-linking to produce the homogeneous sulfur-modified polymer, wherein the homogeneous sulfur-modified polymer contains sulfur in a range of about 25 wt % to about 75 wt % of a combination of the elemental sulfur and the unsaturated hydrocarbon polymer.
