Abstract
An optical system that images a scene at two different fields of view, with switching between fields of view enabled by switchable mirrored surface is disclosed. A voltage change across the switchable mirror element generates a change in the reflection and transmission properties of the element, such that the element switches between a mirror state and a lens state. When nested in an annular reflective optic system of a given field of view, the switching element enables the opening of an additional optical path through the center of the reflective optics where a set of refractive optics are assembled into an imaging system for a second field of view. This dual field-of-view system changes field of view with no mechanical movement.
Claims13
A compact optical imager that can switch field of view without mechanical motion, comprising:
- annular folded optics comprising three annular mirrored surfaces sequentially ordered such that the largest outer diameter annular mirrored surface receives light first from a distant object for first reflection, the next largest outer diameter annular mirrored surface receives the first reflected light for second reflection, and the third mirrored surface receives the second reflected light for third reflection;
- refracting lens elements arranged into an imaging system that is coaxial with the annular mirrored surfaces;
- an electrically switchable layer having a switchable reflective surface that can change state between mirror and clear;
- and
- a sensor array configured to receive a focused image from either a reflected path of the annular folded optics or a refracted path of the refracting lens elements, based on the state of the electrically switchable layer.
A compact narrow field-of-view optical imaging method capable of electrically switching to a wide field of view, the compact narrow field-of-view optical imaging method comprising:
- imaging a distant object through a narrow field-of-view annular window having an aperture stop with a defining stop annulus;
- reflecting said narrow field-of-view image through annular folded optics comprising three annular mirrored surfaces arranged in an annular configuration concentric with the stop annulus;
- providing an alternate wide field-of-view image through a lens-based imaging system disposed coaxial with the annular mirrored surfaces;
- and
- transmitting said narrow field-of-view image reflected through said annular folded optics to a switchable reflective surface, wherein, when said switchable reflective surface is in a mirror state, a mirror surface gives said narrow field-of-view image a final reflection towards an image plane of a sensor array, and wherein, when said switchable reflective surface is switched to a clear alternate state, said alternate wide field-of-view image is passed through a clear surface of the switchable reflective surface and proceeds to the image plane of the sensor array.
