Abstract
A robotic actuator comprises a mass manufactured bellows, wherein the mass manufactured bellows allows a volume change by localized bending, and wherein the mass manufactured bellows is formed from a material that has a higher strength in at least two axes relative to at most one other axis, and an end effector, wherein the end effector is coupled to the manufactured bellows.
Claims21
An elongated robotic, device that includes:
- a plurality of robotic actuators, with each robotic actuator comprising:
- a first and second mass manufactured bellows, wherein the mass manufactured bellows allows a volume change by localized bending of a wall of the mass manufactured bellows, and
- wherein the mass manufactured bellows is formed from a material or a composite of materials that has a higher strength in at least two axes relative to at most one other axis;
- a plurality of elongated rigid couplers respectively associated with at least one robotic actuator including a first robotic actuator coupled to a first rigid coupler, a second robotic actuator coupled to a second rigid coupler and the second robotic actuator coupled to the first rigid coupler,
- wherein the first and second robotic actuator and first and second rigid coupler define a length between a first and second end with the first rigid coupler disposed between the first and second robotic actuator and with the second robotic actuator disposed between the first and second rigid coupler;
- wherein each robotic actuator further comprises a first and second fluid valve respectively associated with the first and second mass manufactured bellows;
- wherein the first and second fluid valves are disposed in a rigid coupler associated with the robotic actuator associated with the first and second fluid valves;
- and
- an end effector, wherein the end effector is coupled at the first end.

A robotic device that comprises:
- a plurality of actuators that each include at least a first and second bellows configured to independently expand and contract along a length in response to fluid being introduced or fluid being released from the first and second bellows;
- and
- a plurality of couplers respectively associated with at least one actuator including a first actuator coupled to a first coupler, a second actuator coupled to a second coupler and the second actuator coupled to the first coupler,
- wherein the first and second actuator and first and second coupler define a length between a first and second end with the first coupler disposed between the first and second actuator and with the second actuator disposed between the first and second coupler;
- wherein each actuator further comprises a first and second fluid valve respectively associated with the first and second bellows;
- and wherein the first and second fluid valve are disposed in a rigid coupler associated with the actuator associated with the first and second fluid valve.
