Abstract
An orthopedic device for implanting between adjacent vertebrae comprising: an arcuate balloon and a hardenable material within said balloon. In some embodiments, the balloon has a footprint that substantially corresponds to a perimeter of a vertebral endplate. An inflatable device is inserted through a cannula into an intervertebral space and oriented so that, upon expansion, a natural angle between vertebrae will be at least partially restored. At least one component selected from the group consisting of a load-bearing component and an osteobiologic component is directed into the inflatable device through a fluid communication means.
Claims27
An intervertebral fusion device, comprising:
- a) first and second structural walls;
- b) a core comprising first and second side surfaces connecting the walls, and an opening in the first side surface;
- and
- c) a cannula having a first end portion in fluid connection with the opening,
- wherein the walls are separated by a first distance W1 in a collapsed condition and a second distance W2 in an expanded condition,
- wherein W2 is greater than W1;
- and
- wherein the device is arcuate.
An intervertebral fusion device, comprising:
- a) first and second structural walls;
- b) a core comprising first and second side surfaces connecting the walls, and an opening in the first side surface;
- and
- c) a cannula having a first end portion in fluid connection with the opening,
- wherein the walls are separated by a first distance W1 in a collapsed condition and a second distance W2 in an expanded condition,
- wherein W2 is greater than W1, and
- wherein, in the expanded condition, a height of the first side surface is less than a height of the second side surface.
An intervertebral fusion device, comprising:
- a) first and second structural walls;
- b) a core comprising first and second side surfaces connecting the walls, and an opening in the first side surface;
- and
- c) a cannula having a first end portion in fluid connection with the opening,
- wherein the walls are separated by a first distance W1 in a collapsed condition and a second distance W2 in an expanded condition,
- wherein W2 is greater than W1, and
- wherein, in the expanded condition, a height of an anterior portion of the device is greater than a height of a posterior portion of the device.
A method of treating an intervertebral disc space between first and second opposed vertebral endplates, comprising:
- inserting into the disc space an intervertebral fusion device comprising:
- a) first and second structural walls, and
- b) a core comprising first and second side surfaces connecting the walls, and an opening in the first side surface,
- wherein the walls are separated by a first distance W1 in a collapsed condition;
- expanding the device so that i) the walls are separated by a second distance W2 in an expanded condition, wherein W2 is greater than W1, and ii) the first and second structural walls and the first and second side surfaces define a cavity therebetween in the expanded condition;
- and
- delivering osteobiologic graft material through the opening in the first side surface of the device and into the cavity;
- wherein, in the expanded condition, the first side surface has a height that is less than a height of the second side surface.
