A method of preparing a preformed bone shape for implantation provides irradiating at least a portion of a preformed bone shape by a Neutral Beam derived from a GCIB, and the preformed bone shape so irradiated.

A bone shape for surgical implantation, comprising a bone surface and one or more natural bone growth factors, wherein at least a portion of the boric surface further comprises a barrier layer formed by irradiation of the portion by an accelerated and focused Neutral Beam derived from a gas-cluster ion-beam, to modify the elution rate of the one or more natural bone growth factors.
