Communication protocols for electronic locks

A method for communicating a payload from a connecting device to a lock device, the method comprising:

• operating the connecting device as at least a gateway for communications from the connecting device to the lock device using a first bandwidth wireless communication protocol;
• generating dynamic credentials for establishing a connection with only one temporary access point that is established by the connecting device;
• communicating the generated dynamic credentials to the lock device using the first bandwidth wireless communication protocol;
• establishing the temporary access point for communications between the connecting device and the lock device using a second bandwidth wireless communication protocol that is different from the first bandwidth wireless communication protocol;
• establishing, using at least a portion of the dynamic credentials, a connection between the lock device and the temporary access point for communications between the lock device and the connecting device using the second bandwidth wireless communication protocol;
• communicating, using the temporary access point, the payload from the connecting device to the lock device via the second bandwidth wireless communication protocol;
• and
• terminating the temporary access point following receipt of the payload by the lock device.

A method for scheduling by a server a payload time period for communicating designated payloads to a lock device, the method comprising:

• evaluating usage information of the lock device to determine times of low lock device activity;
• evaluating load demands on the server to determine server times for the delivery of the designated payload to the lock device, the server times being selected time periods in which a load placed on the server corresponding to the communication of the designated payload to the lock device is balanced by other loads on the server during other time periods;
• identifying, by the server, similarities in the times of low lock device activity and the server times to derive the payload time period;
• communicating the derived payload time period to the lock device;
• inquiring by the lock device, during the payload time period, whether the server has a designated payload for the lock device;
• and
• communicating to the lock device the designated payload during the payload time period.
