Abstract
Processes for the preparation of 2,5-dihydroxybenzenesulfonic acid salts of formula (I) and a crystalline form of potassium 2,5 2,5-dihydroxybenzenesulfonic acid are provided.

A process for the preparation of compounds of formula (I)
- wherein X is at least one cation, and m and n are independently 1 or 2, said process comprising:
- i) sulfonation of hydroquinone of formula (II) in the presence or absence of solvent, to provide a compound of formula (III);
- ii) treating the compound of formula (III) with a salt of an organic acid comprising potassium 2-ethylhexanoate or calcium 2-ethylhexanoate in a suitable solvent;
- and
- iii) precipitating the product of formula (I).

A process for the preparation of a compound of formula (I)
- wherein X is potassium, and m and n are each 1, said process comprising:
- i) sulfonation of hydroquinone of formula (II) using sulfuric acid to provide a compound of formula (III);
- ii) treating the compound of formula (III) with potassium 2-ethylhexanoate;
- and
- iii) precipitating the product of formula (I).
