Abstract
A method executed by electronic devices that provide voices of two people in a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) call as binaural sound. The electronic devices process the voices with head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) so the voices externally localize to the two people at least one meter away in empty space where no physical object exists.

A method executed by electronic devices in a computer system that provide voices of two people in a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) call as binaural sound to each other, the method comprising:
- transmitting, over an Internet and from a first portable electronic device (PED) of a first person to a second PED of a second person and during the VoIP call, a voice of the first person in one of mono sound and stereo sound;
- transmitting, over the Internet and from a second PED of the second person to the first PED of the first person and during the VoIP call, a voice of the second person in the one of mono sound and stereo sound;
- processing, with a processor in the first PED and during the VoIP call, the voice of the second person in the one of mono sound and stereo sound with first head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) to produce the voice of the second person in binaural sound that externally localizes to the first person at a first sound localization point (SLP) that is located at least one meter away from the first person in empty space where no physical object exists;
- processing, with a processor in the second PED and during the VoIP call, the voice of the first person in the one of mono sound and stereo sound with second HRTFs to produce the voice of the first person in binaural sound that externally localizes to the second person at a second SLP that is located at least one meter away from the second person in empty space where no physical object exists;
- providing, to the first person through earphones or headphones that communicate with the first PED and during the VoIP call, the voice of the second person in the binaural sound that externally localizes to the first person at the first SLP that is located at least one meter away from the first person in empty space where no physical object exists;
- and
- providing, to the second person through earphones or headphones that communicate with the second PED and during the VoIP call, the voice of the first person in the binaural sound that externally localizes to the second person at the second SLP that is located at least one meter away from the second person in empty space where no physical object exists.
A non-transitory computer readable storage medium storing instructions that electronic devices in a computer system execute to provide voices of two people in a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) call as binaural sound, the method comprising:
- capturing, with a microphone at a first portable electronic device (PED) of a first person and during the VoIP call, a voice of the first person in the VoIP call as one of mono sound and stereo sound;
- capturing, with a microphone at a second PED of a second person and during the VoIP call, a voice of the second person in the VoIP call as the one of mono sound and stereo sound;
- transmitting, from the first PED to the second PED and during the VoIP call, the voice of the first person as the one of mono sound and stereo sound;
- transmitting, from the second PED to the first PED and during the VoIP call, the voice of the second person as the one of mono sound and stereo sound;
- designating, with one of the electronic devices in the computer system, a coordinate location of a first sound localization point (SLP) that is at least one meter away from the first person in empty space where no physical object exists;
- designating, with one of the electronic devices in the computer system, a coordinate location of a second SLP that is at least one meter away from the second person in empty space where no physical object exists;
- processing, with one of the electronic devices in the computer system and during the VoIP call, the voice of the second person with first head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) having a coordinate location that corresponds to the coordinate location of the first SLP to generate the voice of the second person in the binaural sound that externally localizes to the first person at the first SLP that is at least one meter away from the first person in empty space where no physical object exists;
- processing, with one of the electronic devices in the computer system and during the VoIP call, the voice of the first person with second HRTFs having a coordinate location that corresponds to the coordinate location of the second SLP to generate the voice of the first person in the binaural sound that externally localizes to the second person at the second SLP that is at least one meter away from the second person in empty space where no physical object exists;
- providing, to the first person through one of earphones and headphones that communicate with the first PED and during the VoIP call, the voice of the second person in the binaural sound that externally localizes to the first person at the first SLP that is at least one meter away from the first person in empty space where no physical object exists;
- and
- providing, to the second person through one of earphones and headphones that communicate with the second PED and during the VoIP call, the voice of the first person in the binaural sound that externally localizes to the second person at the second SLP that is at least one meter away from the second person in empty space where no physical object exists.
A non-transitory computer readable storage medium storing instructions that electronic devices execute as a method during a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) call between a first person with a first portable electronic device (PED) and a second person with a second PED, the method comprising:
- transmitting, over an Internet, a voice of the first person from the first PED to the second PED during the VoIP call;
- transmitting, over the Internet, a voice of the second person from the second PED to the first PED during the VoIP call;
- retrieving, from memory of the first PED, first head-related transfer functions (HRTFs);
- retrieving, from memory of the second PED, second HRTFs;
- processing, with one of the electronic devices and during the VoIP call, the first PED, the voice of the second person with the first HRTFs so the voice of the second person externally localizes as the binaural sound to the first person at a first sound localization point (SLP) that is at least one meter away from the first person and in empty space where no physical object exists;
- processing, with one of the electronic devices and during the VoIP call, the voice of the first person with the second HRTFs so the voice of the first person externally localizes as the binaural sound to the second person at a second SLP that is at least one meter away from the second person and in empty space where no physical object exists;
- providing, to the first person through one of first earphones and first headphones in communication with the first PED and during the VoIP call, the voice of the second person in the binaural sound that externally localizes to the first person at the first SLP that is at least one meter away from the first person and in empty space where no physical object exists;
- and
- providing, to the second person through one of second earphones and second headphones in communication with the second PED and during the VoIP call, the voice of the first person in the binaural sound that externally localizes to the second person at the second SLP that is at least one meter away from the second person and in empty space where no physical object exists.
