Abstract
A first Core Network (CN) node (e.g., Gateway GPRS Support Node), a second CN node (e.g., Serving GPRS Support Node) and a wireless access node (e.g., Base Station Subsystem) are described herein that are configured to efficiently deliver a network triggered report notification to a wireless device (e.g., Internet of Things device).
Claims18
A wireless device within a wireless communication system, the wireless device comprising:
- a processor;
- and,
- a memory that stores processor-executable instructions, wherein when the processor interfaces with the memory to execute the processor-executable instructions, the processor causes the wireless device to:
- perform a Non-Access Stratum (NAS) signaling procedure with a Core Network (CN) node to provide the CN node with a User Datagram Protocol (UDP) source port number and a range of UDP destination port numbers that are to be used by the CN node to determine that an IP packet originated by an external node includes information to trigger the wireless device to perform a certain action;
- and
- after the performing step, receive, from a wireless access node, a message which indicates that the wireless device is being requested to perform the certain action, wherein the certain action is to transmit a specific type of report from the wireless device to an external node.
A wireless device within a wireless communication system, the wireless device comprising:
- a processor;
- and,
- a memory that stores processor-executable instructions, wherein when the processor interfaces with the memory to execute the processor-executable instructions, the processor causes the wireless device to:
- perform a Packet Data Protocol (PDP) Context Activation procedure with a Core Network (CN) node, wherein during the PDP Context Activation procedure, the wireless device informs the CN node that when an IP packet that is associated with the wireless device and that has a payload that is less than a threshold of X octets is received by the CN node, then that IP packet is to be considered as a trigger for the wireless device to perform a certain action;
- and
- after the performing step, receive, from a wireless access node, a message which indicates that the wireless device is being requested to perform the certain action, wherein the certain action is to transmit a specific type of report from the wireless device to an external node.
A method in a wireless device within a wireless communication system, the method comprising:
- performing a Non-Access Stratum (NAS) signaling procedure with a Core Network (CN) node to provide the CN node with a User Datagram Protocol (UDP) source port number and a range of UDP destination port numbers that are to be used by the CN node to determine that an IP packet originated by an external node includes information to trigger the wireless device to perform a certain action;
- and
- receiving, by the wireless device from a wireless access node, a message which indicates that the wireless device is being requested to perform the certain action, wherein the certain action is to transmit a specific type of report from the wireless device to an external node.
A method in a wireless device within a wireless communication system, the method comprising:
- performing a Packet Data Protocol (PDP) Context Activation procedure with a Core Network (CN) node, wherein during the PDP Context Activation procedure the wireless device informs the CN node that when an IP packet that is associated with the wireless device and that has a payload that is less than a threshold of X octets is received by the CN node, then that IP packet is to be considered as a trigger for the wireless device to perform a certain action;
- and
- receiving, by the wireless device from a wireless access node, a message which indicates that the wireless device is being requested to perform the certain action, wherein the certain action is to transmit a specific type of report from the wireless device to an external node.
