Abstract
A system and method for receiving a signal, comprising an input adapted to receive a radio frequency signal having a strong interferer; a signal generator, adapted to produce a representation of the interferer as an analog signal generated based on an oversampled digital representation thereof; and a component adapted to cancel the strong interferer from radio frequency signal based on the generated analog signal to produce a modified radio frequency signal substantially absent the interferer. The system typically has a nonlinear component that either saturates or produces distortion from the strong interferer, which is thereby reduced. The system preferably employs high speed circuits which digitize and process radio frequency signals without analog mixers.

A receiver comprising:
- an input configured to receive a combined radio frequency signal comprising an analog radio frequency signal and an undesired radio frequency signal within a radio frequency band comprising a frequency in excess of 500 MHz;
- a signal source, configured to provide a cancellation analog radio frequency signal which tracks at least a phase of the undesired radio frequency signal within the radio frequency band over time;
- a subtractor configured to receive the combined signal and the cancellation radio frequency signal, and to produce a modified analog radio frequency signal with a representation of the undesired signal attenuated with respect to a representation of the analog radio frequency signal;
- a demodulator configured to demodulate information represented within the analog radio frequency signal from the combined radio frequency signal, comprising a digitizer having a dynamic range, wherein a dynamic range of the combined signal over time exceeds the dynamic range of the digitizer, such that the undesired radio frequency signal interferes with demodulation of the information represented within the analog radio frequency signal by the demodulator;
- and
- a control configured to control the signal source dependent on at least an output of the digitizer to ensure that the phase of the cancellation analog radio frequency signal results in an attenutation of the undesired radio frequency signal in the modified analog radio frequency signal with respect to the representation of the analog radio frequency signal.
A radio frequency signal receiving method, comprising:
- receiving a combined radio frequency signal comprising an analog radio frequency signal and an undesired radio frequency signal within a radio frequency band comprising a frequency in excess of 500 MHz;
- providing a cancellation analog radio frequency signal which tracks at least a phase of the undesired radio frequency signal within the radio frequency band over time;
- subtracting the cancellation radio frequency signal from the combined signal with a linear subtractor, and to produce a modified analog radio frequency signal with a representation of the undesired signal attenuated with respect to a representation of the analog radio frequency signal;
- demodulating information represented within the analog radio frequency signal from the combined radio frequency signal, with a demodulator comprising a digitizer having a dynamic range, wherein a dynamic range of the combined signal over time exceeds the dynamic range of the digitizer, such that the undesired radio frequency signal interferes with demodulation of the information represented within the analog radio frequency signal by the demodulator;
- and
- controlling the signal source dependent on at least an output of the digitizer to ensure that the phase of the cancellation analog radio frequency signal results in an attenutation of the undesired radio frequency signal in the modified analog radio frequency signal with respect to the representation of the analog radio frequency signal.
A receiver comprising:
- an input configured to receive a combined radio frequency signal comprising an analog radio frequency signal and an undesired radio frequency signal within a radio frequency band comprising a frequency in excess of 500 MHz, wherein the analog radio frequency signal and the undesired radio frequency signal occupy overlapping frequencies and are inseparable by frequency domain filtering;
- a signal source, configured to provide a cancellation analog radio frequency signal which tracks at least a phase of the undesired radio frequency signal within the radio frequency band over time, comprising a digitally controlled gain and time delay subsystem;
- a subtractor configured to receive the combined signal and the cancellation radio frequency signal, and to produce a modified analog radio frequency signal with a representation of the undesired signal attenuated with respect to a representation of the analog radio frequency signal;
- and
- a control, configured to provide parameters for the digitally controlled gain and time delay subsystem dependent on an output of a saturable digitizer operating on a representation of the modified analog radio frequency signal, wherein a dynamic range of the combined signal over time exceeds a dynamic range of the saturable digitizer with respect to successful recovery of information modulated in the analog radio frequency signal;
- and
- a control configured to control the signal source dependent on at least an output of the digitizer to ensure that the phase of the cancellation analog radio frequency signal results in an attenutation of the undesired radio frequency signal in the modified analog radio frequency signal with respect to the representation of the analog radio frequency signal.
