Abstract
A system for performing computing operations in a data center includes one or more sets of computer systems, one or more primary power systems, and a reserve power system. The primary power systems include at least one power distribution unit that supplies power to at least one of the sets of computer systems. The reserve power system automatically supplies power to at least one of the sets of computer systems if a condition is met (such as a failure of the primary power system).
Claims22
A system for supplying power, comprising:
- two or more sets of computer systems;
- two or more respective primary power systems each coupled to, and configured to supply primary power to, a respective one of the two or more sets of computer systems,
- wherein the two or more respective primary power systems are electrically coupled to a primary transformer that receives power from a utility power source,
- wherein each of the two or more respective primary power systems comprises:
- at least one uninterruptible power supply (UPS) electrically coupled in the respective primary power system downstream of the primary transformer;
- and
- a power distribution unit (PDU) electrically coupled in the respective primary power system downstream of the at least one UPS, wherein the PDU is configured to reduce a voltage of power downstream of the at least one UPS and distribute the reduced voltage power to a respective set of the two or more sets of computer systems;
- a reserve power system coupled to, and configured to automatically supply reserve power from a reserve power source to, each of the two or more sets of computer systems,
- wherein the reserve power system comprises:
- a reserve transformer, electrically coupled to the reserve power source;
- at least one UPS electrically coupled in the reserve power system downstream of the reserve transformer;
- two or more sets of one or more remote power panels, wherein each respective remote power panel is configured to distribute power from the at least one UPS to a respective set of the two or more sets of computer systems;
- two or more respective shunt trips, wherein respective ones of the two or more shunt trips are electrically coupled in the reserve power system upstream of respective ones of the two or more sets of remote power panels and downstream of the at least one UPS and are each configured to shed loads associated with a respective one of the sets of remote power panels;
- and
- a controller configured to control shedding of loads via the two or more respective shunt trips based, at least in part, on a priority of computer systems that are distributed power from respective ones of the sets of remote power panels,
- wherein the total power requirements of the two or more sets of computer systems exceed the capacity of the reserve power system to supply power;
- and
- respective automatic transfer switches configured to automatically transfer at least one set of computer systems of the two or more sets of computer systems from receiving power from a particular one of the two or more respective primary power systems via a PDU of the particular one of the two or more respective primary power systems to instead receive power from the reserve power system via one of the remote power panels of the reserve power system while other ones of the two or more sets of computer systems continue to receive primary power from other ones of the respective primary power systems.
A system for providing reserve power to computer systems in a data center, comprising:
- a reserve power system coupled to, and configured to supply power to, each of two or more sets of computer systems that respectively receive power from respective ones of two or more primary power systems,
- wherein the reserve power system comprises:
- a reserve power-side transformer electrically coupled to a reserve power source;
- at least one reserve power-side UPS electrically coupled in the reserve power system downstream of the reserve power-side transformer;
- two or more sets of one or more remote power panels, wherein each respective one of the remote power panels is configured to distribute power from the at least one reserve power-side UPS to a respective one of the two or more sets of computer systems;
- two or more respective shunt trips, wherein respective ones of the two or more shunt trips are electrically coupled in the reserve power system upstream of respective ones of the two or more sets of remote power panels and downstream of the at least one reserve power-side UPS and are each configured to shed loads associated with a respective one of the sets of remote power panels during overload conditions;
- a controller configured to control shedding of loads via the two or more respective shunt trips based, at least in part, on a priority of computer systems that are distributed power from respective ones of the sets of remote power panels;
- and
- two or more automatic transfer switches, wherein a first one of the automatic transfer switches is configured to automatically switch from a primary power-side PDU to at least one reserve power-side remote power panel for at least one set of computer systems when at least one condition is met, wherein a second one of the automatic transfer switches is configured to automatically switch from another primary power-side PDU to another at least one reserve power-side remote power panel for another set of computer systems when at least one condition is met, and
- wherein the total power requirements of the two or more sets of computer systems coupled to the reserve power system exceed the capacity of the reserve power system to supply power.
A method of supplying reserve power to computer systems in a data center, comprising:
- coupling a reserve power system to two or more automatic transfer switches coupled to two or more sets of computer systems, wherein respective ones of the two or more automatic transfer switches are also coupled to respective ones of two or more primary power systems and configured to feed power to respective ones of the two or more sets of computer systems from respective ones of the primary power systems, wherein the total power requirements of the two or more sets of computer systems exceed the capacity of the reserve power system to supply power,
- wherein the reserve power system comprises:
- a reserve power side UPS that is electrically coupled in the reserve power system downstream of a reserve power side transformer;
- two or more sets of one or more remote power panels wherein each respective one of the remote power panels is configured to distribute power from the reserve power side UPS to a respective one of the two or more sets of computer systems via a respective automatic transfer switch;
- two or more respective shunt trips, wherein respective ones of the two or more shunt trips are electrically coupled in the reserve power system upstream of respective ones of the two or more sets of remote power panels and downstream of the reserve power side UPS and are each configured to shed loads associated with a respective one of the sets of remote power panels during overload conditions;
- and
- a controller configured to control shedding of loads via the two or more respective shunt trips based, at least in part, on a priority of computer systems that are distributed power from respective ones of the sets of remote power panels;
- in response to detection of a failure in primary power supplied from one of the respective primary power systems to an individual set of the two or more sets of computer systems, automatically selectively switching, via one of the automatic transfer switches, the individual set of computer systems from receiving primary power from the respective primary power system to receiving reserve power, via one of the remote power panels, while maintaining primary power to at least one other of the two or more sets of computer systems, wherein the reserve power system remains configured to automatically supply power to each of the other sets of computer systems.
