Method and apparatus for radio frequency tuning utilizing a determined use case

A method comprising:

• measuring, by a mobile communication device, a first signal strength, a first radio frequency (RF) phase, a second signal strength, and a second RF phase, wherein the first signal strength and first RF phase are measured from a first antenna of the mobile communication device based on a first matching network coupled to the first antenna and being tuned to an initial state, and wherein the second signal strength and second RF phase are measured from a second antenna of the mobile communication device based on a second matching network coupled to the second antenna and being tuned to the initial state;
• determining, by the mobile communication device, a signal strength differential value based on a difference between the first signal strength and the second signal strength, and an RF phase differential value based on a difference between the first RF phase and the second RF phase;
• and
• obtaining, by the mobile communication device, a selected use case from among a group of use cases based on the signal strength differential value lying within a range of signal strength differential values associated with the selected use case, and based on the RF phase differential value lying within a range of RF phase differential values associated with the selected use case.

A non-transitory machine-readable storage medium, comprising executable instructions that, when executed by a processing system of a communication device including a processor, facilitates performance of operations, comprising:

• tuning a matching network coupled with at least one of a plurality of antennas to at least one initial state;
• measuring operational data associated with at least two of the plurality of antennas, wherein the operational data includes signal strength information, and wherein the operational data comprises a first RF phase value for a first antenna of the at least two of the plurality of antennas and a second RF phase value for a second antenna of the at least two of the plurality of antennas;
• analyzing the operational data to determine an operational data differential value comprising a signal strength differential value and an RF phase differential value between the at least two of the plurality of antennas;
• obtaining a selected use case for the communication device from among a group of use cases stored in a memory, wherein each use case of the group of use cases is mapped at least to a corresponding range of RF phase differential values, and wherein the RF phase differential value is within the corresponding range of RF phase differential values of the selected use case;
• and
• adjusting a variable reactance of a tunable element in the matching network according to a tuning setting that is determined based on the selected use case.
