Abstract
The invention relates to a camera modeling and calibration system and method using a new set of variables to compensate for imperfections in line of sight axis squareness with camera plane and which increases accuracy in measuring distortion introduced by image curvature caused by geometric and chromatic lens distortion and wherein the camera image plane is represented from a full 3D perspective projection.

A computer-implemented method for modeling an imaging device for use in calibration and image correction, the method comprising:
- defining a first 3D orthogonal coordinate system having an origin located at a focal point of the imaging device, a first axis of the first coordinate system extending along a direction of a line of sight of the imaging device;
- defining a second 3D orthogonal coordinate system having an origin located at a unitary distance from the focal point, a first axis of the second coordinate system extending along the direction of the line of sight, a second and a third axis of the second coordinate system substantially parallel to a second and a third axis of the first coordinate system respectively, the second and the third axis of the second coordinate system thereby defining a true scale plane square with the line of sight;
- defining a third 3D coordinate system having an origin located at a focal distance from the focal point, a first axis of the third coordinate system extending along the direction of the line of sight, a second and a third axis of the third coordinate system respectively tilted by a first and a second angle relative to an orientation of the second and the third axis of the second coordinate system, the second and the third axis of the third coordinate system thereby defining an image plane off-squareness relative to the line of sight;
- receiving a set of 3D coordinates associated with a point of a real world 3D object captured by the imaging device;
- computing a projection of the point onto the true scale plane, thereby obtaining a first set of planar coordinates, and onto the image plane, thereby obtaining a second set of planar coordinates;
- and
- outputting the second set of planar coordinates indicative of a location of an image point corresponding to the point of the 3D object.
A system for modeling an imaging device for use in calibration and image correction, the system comprising:

- defining a third 3D coordinate system having an origin located at a focal distance from the focal point, a first axis of the third coordinate system extending along the direction of the line of sight, a second and a third axis of the third coordinate system respectively tilted by a first and a second angle relative to an orientation of the second and the third axis of the second coordinate system, the second and the third axis of the third coordinate system thereby defining an image plane off-squareness relative to the line of sight;
- receiving a set of 3D coordinates associated with a point of a real world 3D object captured by the imaging device;
- computing a projection of the point onto the true scale plane, thereby obtaining a first set of planar coordinates, and onto the image plane, thereby obtaining a second set of planar coordinates;
- and
- outputting the second set of planar coordinates indicative of a location of an image point corresponding to the point of the 3D object.
A non-transitory computer readable medium having stored thereon program code executable by a processor for modeling an imaging device for use in calibration and image correction, the program code executable for:
- defining a first 3D orthogonal coordinate system having an origin located at a focal point of the imaging device, a first axis of the first coordinate system extending along a direction of a line of sight of the imaging device;
