Abstract
Configurations are disclosed for presenting virtual reality and augmented reality experiences to users. The system may comprise an image-generating source to provide one or more frames of image data in a time-sequential manner, a light modulator configured to transmit light associated with the one or more frames of image data, a substrate to direct image information to a user's eye, wherein the substrate houses a plurality of reflectors, a first reflector of the plurality of reflectors to reflect transmitted light associated with a first frame of image data at a first angle to the user's eye, and a second reflector to reflect transmitted light associated with a second frame of the image data at a second angle to the user's eye.
Claims33
A system for displaying virtual content, the system comprising:
- an image-generating source device that oscillates or vibrates to transmit one or more frames of image data in a time-sequential manner;
- a light modulator configured to transmit light associated with the one or more frames of the image data;
- a substrate comprising a plurality of substrate subsections to direct the light that comprises curved wavefronts from the light modulator to a user's eye by using at least a plurality of reflectors housed in the substrate to render the image information in focus in the user's eye;
- a first reflector of the plurality of reflectors to reflect transmitted light associated with a first frame of the image data at a first angle to the user's eye;
- and
- a second reflector to reflect transmitted light associated with a second frame of the image data at a second angle to the user's eye, wherein
- each reflector of the plurality of reflectors has a selectively variable angle of reflection, and
- each reflector is configured such that a refractive index of the each reflector is varied in an analog manner based in part or in whole upon a total number of sub-frames in the first frame or the second frame as well as a refresh rate at which the one or more frames are presented to the user's eye.
A method for displaying virtual content to a user, the method comprising:
- providing one or more light patterns associated with one or more frames of image data in a time-sequential manner from an image-generating source that oscillates or vibrates to a substrate that comprises a plurality of substrate subsections;
- modulating the one or more light patterns into one or more modulated light patterns that comprise curved wavefronts via a light modulator;
- reflecting the one or more modulated light patterns associated with the one or more frames of image data via a substrate to an exit pupil by using at least a plurality of reflectors housed in the substrate to variably direct light toward the exit pupil and to render the one or more frames in focus in a user's eye;
- selectively varying an angle of reflection of a reflector of the plurality of reflectors;
- and
- selectively varying a refractive index of the reflector in an analog manner based in part or in whole upon a total number of sub-frames in the first frame or the second frame as well as a refresh rate at which the one or more frames are presented to the user's eye.
