Systems and methods for generating electronic map displays with points-of-interest information based on reference locations

A system for generating an electronic map display, the system comprising:

• an input device for receiving input from a user;
• a display device for displaying the electronic map display;
• a processor configured to:
• search for points of interest (POIs) in a search area associated with a reference point along a route;
• compare a density of the POIs in the search area with a density threshold;
• rank the POIs based on a distance of each of the POIs from a location of the reference point;
• adjust the search area when the density of the POIs is less than the density threshold;
• and
• search for POIs in the adjusted search area.

A tangible, non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing a program which, when executed by a computer, causes the computer to perform a method for generating an electronic map display, the method comprising:

• searching for points of interest (POIs) in a search area associated with a reference point along a route;
• comparing a density of the POIs in the search area with a density threshold;
• ranking the POIs based on a distance of each of the POIs from a location of the reference point;
• adjusting the search area when the density of the POIs is less than the density threshold;
• and
• searching for POIs in the adjusted search area.
