Compositions and methods for treating immune cells and activating immune responses are disclosed. The compositions comprise one or more optically active chiral cationic lipids.

A method of enhancing a DOTAP induced immunostimulatory effect in an immune system of a mammal, said method consisting of the step of administering a chiral cationic lipid consisting of R-DOTAP to the mammal.
