Abstract
The invention provides a lubricating composition containing an aromatic compound and an oil of lubricating viscosity. The invention further relates to the use of the lubricating composition in an internal combustion engine. The invention further relates to the use of the aromatic compound as an antiwear agent.
Claims11
A lubricating composition comprising an oil of lubricating viscosity and an aromatic compound of formula (1):
- wherein
- R1 is —C(R6)2C(R6)2C(O)—XR3;
- each Y1,Y2 and Y3 is independently —H or —OR2 with the proviso that at least two of Y1,Y2 and Y3 are —OR2 and where at least two —OR2 groups are adjacent to one another;
- R2 is independently hydrogen or a linear or branched hydrocarbyl group containing 1 to 10 carbon atoms;
- R3 is (i) an alkyl group selected from the group consisting of methyl, ethyl, propyl, 2-methylpropyl, butyl, tert-butyl, pentyl, isoamyl, 2-ethylhexyl, nonyl, decyl, undecyl, dodecyl, tridecyl, tetradecyl, pentadecyl, hexadecyl, heptadecyl, octadecyl, nonadecyl, eicosyl and blends thereof, or (ii) an alkoxy group selected from the group consisting of methoxy, ethoxy, propoxy, butoxy, pentloxy and blends thereof, or (iii) 2-phenylethyl, or (iv) mixtures thereof;
- X is —O—, —S—, or >NR4;
- R4 is hydrogen or a linear or branched hydrocarbyl group containing 1 to 5 carbon atoms;
- each R6 is hydrogen, —CN, NH2, an ester group —C(O)O—R7, or mixtures thereof;
- R7 is hydrogen or a hydrocarbyl group containing 1 to 30 carbon atoms;
- and
- the sum of carbon atoms on R1, R2, R3, R4 is at least 6.
