## Abstract

An ionizing radiation detector or scintillator system includes a scintillating material comprising an organic crystalline compound selected to generate photons in response to the passage of ionizing radiation. The organic compound has a crystalline symmetry of higher order than monoclinic, for example an orthorhombic, trigonal, tetragonal, hexagonal, or cubic symmetry. A photodetector is optically coupled to the scintillating material, and configured to generate electronic signals having pulse shapes based on the photons generated in the scintillating material. A discriminator is coupled to the photon detector, and configured to discriminate between neutrons and gamma rays in the ionizing radiation based on the pulse shapes of the output signals.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A scintillator system comprising:
an organic scintillator having a rhombohedral or cubic symmetry selected from the group consisting of:
tris(1-naphthyloxy)triethylamine,
tris(1-naphthyloxy)triethylamine perchlorate,
tris(1-naphthyloxy)triethylamine nitrate,
tris(1-phenoxy)triethylamine,
tris-1-(4-bromophenoxy)triethylamine,
[tris(1-phenyloxy)triethylamine] perchlorate,
tris-1-(biphenyloxy)triethyl amine,
tris(dihydronaphthodioxin)phosphine oxide,
tris(9-anthracenyl)phosphine,
1,3,5-tris(biphenyl)benzene, (4-bromo)hexaethyltruxene, and
tris(dimesitylboryl)hexaethyltruxene;
a photodetector optically coupled to the organic scintillator, the photodetector configured to generate electronic signals having pulse shapes characterized by fast and slow components of light emission by the organic scintillator in response to ionizing radiation; and
a discriminator coupled to the photodetector, the discriminator configured to discriminate between different types of the ionizing radiation based on relative contributions of the fast and slow components to the pulse shapes.
