## Abstract

A method for performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) includes elevating the heart of an individual to a first height relative to a lower body of the individual. The lower body may be in a substantially horizontal plane. The method may also include elevating the head of the individual to a second height relative to the lower body of the individual. The second height may be greater than the first height. The method may further include performing one or more of a type of CPR or a type of intrathoracic pressure regulation while elevating the heart and the head. The first height and the second height may be determined based on one or both of the type of CPR or the type of intrathoracic pressure regulation.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method for performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), comprising the steps of:
positioning an individual on an elevation device in a stable selected position to elevate the individual's heart and head, the stable selected position comprising a relationship between the individual's head, neck, and chest, the elevation device comprising:
a base; and
an upper support pivotably coupled to the base, wherein the upper support is configured to receive and support the individual's upper back, shoulders, and head, the upper support comprising a lower section and an upper section, wherein the lower section is pivotally coupled to the base and the upper section is configured to receive at least the individual's shoulders, neck or head, and wherein the upper section is extendable lengthwise relative to the lower section;
pivoting the upper support to further elevate the head of the individual;
expanding the upper support lengthwise by sliding the upper section relative to the lower section while the upper support is pivoting to maintain the individual in the stable selected position throughout elevation of the upper back, shoulders, and head, thereby assisting to prevent the individual from curling forward as the upper support is pivoted; and
performing CPR or intrathoracic pressure regulation after the step of expanding the upper support and while the heart and the head are elevated.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) of claim 1, wherein:
the stable selected position comprises a sniffing position.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method of performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) of claim 1, wherein:
the upper support comprises an upper back plate and at least one track that is pivotably coupled with the base;
expanding the upper support comprises sliding the upper back plate relative to the track using a sliding mechanism.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method for performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) of claim 1, further comprising:
engaging a lock mechanism to maintain the upper support in a desired expanded position.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method for performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) of claim 1, wherein:
the elevation device further comprises a thoracic plate operably coupled to the base, wherein the thoracic plate is configured to receive a chest compression device; and
the method further comprises pivoting the thoracic plate relative to the base, thereby adjusting an orientation of the chest compression device.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The method for performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) of claim 5, further comprising:
sliding the thoracic plate lengthwise relative to the base, thereby adjusting a position of the chest compression device.

### Claim 7 (depends on 5)

The method for performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) of claim 5, wherein:
expanding the upper support causes a corresponding adjustment of the thoracic plate such that the chest compression device is in a proper orientation in which the chest compression device is properly aligned with the individual's heart and is at a substantially orthogonal angle relative to the individual's sternum.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The method for performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) of claim 7, wherein:
the corresponding adjustment comprises a change in angle of the thoracic plate relative to a horizontal plane.

### Claim 9

A method for performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), comprising the steps of:
positioning an individual on an elevation device to elevate the individual's heart and head, the elevation device comprising:
a base;
an upper support pivotably coupled to the base, wherein the upper support is configured to receive and support the individual's upper back, shoulders, and head, the upper support comprising a lower section and an upper section, wherein the lower section is pivotally coupled to the base and the upper section is configured to receive at least the individual's shoulders, neck or head, and wherein the upper section is extendable lengthwise relative to the lower section; and
a thoracic plate operably coupled to the base, wherein the thoracic plate is configured to receive a chest compression device;
adjusting a position of the thoracic plate of the elevation device to properly orient the chest compression device in alignment with the individual's heart and substantially orthogonal relative to the individual's sternum;
pivoting the upper support to further elevate the head of the individual;
expanding the upper support lengthwise by sliding the upper section relative to the lower section while the upper support is pivoting to maintain the individual in a stable selected position throughout elevation of the upper back, shoulders, and head thereby assisting to prevent the individual from curling forward as the upper support is pivoted; and
performing CPR by repeatedly compressing the individual's chest after the step of expanding the upper support and while the heart and the head are elevated.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The method for performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) of claim 9, wherein:
adjusting the position of the thoracic plate comprises one or both of pivoting the thoracic plate relative to the base or sliding the thoracic plate lengthwise relative to the base, thereby adjusting a position of the chest compression device.

### Claim 11 (depends on 9)

The method for performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) of claim 9, wherein:
pivoting the upper support and adjusting the position of the thoracic plate are linked such that pivoting the upper support causes a corresponding adjustment of the position of the thoracic plate.

### Claim 12 (depends on 9)

The method for performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) of claim 9, further comprising:
engaging at least one lock mechanism to maintain one or both of a position of the upper support and the position of the thoracic plate.

### Claim 13 (depends on 9)

The method for performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) of claim 9, wherein:
expanding the upper support comprises telescoping a support rod of the upper support.

### Claim 14 (depends on 9)

The method for performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) of claim 9, wherein:
the upper support is spring biased toward the individual's body.
