## Abstract

A device positionable in a cavity of a bodily organ (e.g., a heart) may discriminate between fluid (e.g., blood) and non-fluid tissue (e.g., wall of heart) to provide information or a mapping indicative of a position and/or orientation of the device in the cavity. Discrimination may be based on flow, or some other characteristic, for example electrical permittivity or force. The device may selectively ablate portions of the non-fluid tissue based on the information or mapping. The device may detect characteristics (e.g., electrical potentials) indicative of whether ablation was successful. The device may include a plurality of transducers, intravascularly guided in an unexpanded configuration and positioned proximate the non-fluid tissue in an expanded configuration. Expansion mechanism may include helical member(s) or inflatable member(s).

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method of operating a medical system, the method executed by a computing system communicatively connected to the medical system and comprising:
causing transducer electrodes to sense at least in part a physical interior surface of a tissue wall of a bodily organ, the physical interior surface interrupted by one or more ports in fluid communication with the bodily organ, the transducer electrodes carried by a frame of a medical device of the medical system, the frame located in at least a portion of the bodily organ, and the causing the transducer electrodes to sense including causing each of the transducer electrodes to sense at least one characteristic indicative of whether a fluid or non-fluid tissue is present and not indicative of a flow of the fluid in the bodily organ;
determining a position of the medical device in the bodily organ at least by executing a mapping process to map the bodily organ, the mapping process including locating one or more positions of the one or more ports at least by computationally discriminating between the fluid and the non-fluid tissue based at least in part on the at least one characteristic sensed by at least some of the transducer electrodes; and
causing at least one display of the medical system to display output from the mapping process.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1 wherein the medical system includes an ablation source, the ablation source coupled to each of at least one transducer element of the medical system, the method further comprising:
causing the ablation source and the at least one transducer element to ablate a portion of the non-fluid tissue in the bodily organ.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2 wherein the bodily organ is a heart, the fluid is blood, and the non-fluid tissue is a non-blood tissue, the method further comprising:
causing each of at least one of the transducer electrodes to sense an electrical potential of the non-blood tissue in the heart at least once after the ablating; and
causing production of an indication based on the sensed electrical potential of the non-blood tissue indicative of whether the ablating was successful.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1 wherein the at least one characteristic includes a permittivity of the fluid or the non-fluid tissue at each of a plurality of frequencies.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1 wherein the determining of the position of the medical device in the bodily organ includes providing information indicative of a three-dimensional pose of the medical device with respect to at least part of the bodily organ.

### Claim 6

A method of operating a medical system including a device locatable in at least a portion of a heart, the device including transducer electrodes, the method executed by a computing system communicatively connected to the medical system, and the method comprising:
causing the transducer electrodes to sense at least in part a physical interior surface of a tissue wall of the heart, the physical interior surface interrupted by one or more ports in fluid communication with the heart, the causing the transducer electrodes to sense including causing each of the transducer electrodes to sense at least one characteristic indicative of whether blood or non-blood tissue is present and not indicative of a flow of the blood in the heart, and the causing the transducer electrodes to sense including causing each of the transducer electrodes to sense electrical potential of the non-blood tissue in the heart;
determining a position of the device in the heart at least by executing a mapping process to map the heart, the mapping process including locating one or more positions of the one or more ports at least by computationally discriminating between the blood and the non-blood tissue based at least in part on the at least one characteristic sensed by at least some of the transducer electrodes; and
providing information indicative of a position of the device in the heart and an indication based on the electrical potential of the non-blood tissue sensed by one or more of the transducer electrodes.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6, wherein the medical system includes an ablation source coupled to each of at least one transducer element of the medical system, the method further comprising:
causing the ablation source and the at least one transducer element to ablate a portion of the non-blood tissue in the heart.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The method of claim 7, further comprising:
causing one or more of the transducer electrodes to sense electrical potential of the non-blood tissue at least once after the ablating; and
producing an indication of whether the ablating was successful based on the electrical potential of the non-blood tissue sensed by the one or more of the transducer electrodes.

### Claim 9 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6 wherein the computationally discriminating between the blood and the non-blood tissue is not based on a velocity or an acceleration of a flow of blood in the heart.
