Abstract
Biomass (e.g., plant biomass, animal biomass, and municipal waste biomass) is processed to produce useful products, such as fuels. For example, systems can use feedstock materials, such as cellulosic and/or lignocellulosic materials and/or starchy materials, to produce ethanol and/or butanol, e.g., by fermentation.
Claims10
A method comprising:
- converting a starchy material, comprising at least 5% by weight of starch, into a fuel by:
- irradiating the starchy material to change the molecular and/or supramolecular structure of the starchy material and thereby reduce its molecular weight;
- saccharifying the irradiated starchy material to produce a composition comprising sugars;
- and
- converting the sugars to a product comprising a hydrocarbon.
