Abstract
A fault current limiter (FCL) includes at least one magnetisable core member and at least one AC magnetomotive force source configured to generate a varying magnetic flux in at least a portion of the at least one magnetisable core member. At least one static magnetomotive force source is positioned to provide a magnetic circuit within at least part of the at least one magnetisable core member and the AC magnetomotive force source and the static magnetomotive force source are relatively positioned to be orthogonal to each other. Typically the static magnetomotive force source may be a permanent magnet and the AC magnetomotive force source configured to generate a varying magnetic flux in both of first and second spaced core members.
Claims26
A fault current limiter (FCL) comprising:
- a plurality of magnetisable core member pairs arranged in a stacked formation;
- at least one AC coil configured to generate a varying magnetic flux in at least a portion of the plurality of magnetisable core member pairs of the stacked formation;
- and
- a plurality of static magnetomotive force sources configured to provide a magnetic circuit within at least part of the plurality of magnetisable core member pairs of the stack formation, wherein at least part of the plurality of static magnetomotive force sources are positioned between corresponding magnetisable core member pairs of the stacked formation,
- wherein the at least one AC coil produces an AC flux that is orthogonal to magnetic moments produced by the plurality of static magnetomotive force sources,
- wherein the magnetisable core members contain at least one air gap,
- wherein at least one air gap is arranged between two adjacent permanent magnets of the a plurality of static magnetomotive force sources so as to space apart the two adjacent magnets,
- wherein the at least one air gap in the magnetisable core members is positioned above and below respective surfaces of pole faces of the adjacent permanent magnets, and
- wherein at least one of the adjacent permanent magnets is intersected by an air gap.
