Abstract
Compounds are attached to carbon nanotubes (CNT) by a process which comprises: subjecting surface treated CNTs which have been treated to induce negatively charged surface groups thereon, to nucleophilic substitution reaction with a compound carrying a functional group capable of reacting with the negatively charged groups on the CNT surface, whereby the compound chemically bonds to the CNT. The surface CNT treatment may be reduction. The compounds which are bonded to the CNT may be epoxy resins, bonded directly or through a spacer group. Bi-functional CNTs, grafted to both epoxy resins and other polymers such as polystyrene, are also made by this process.
Claims6
A process of chemically attaching compounds to carbon nanotubes (CNT's) which comprises:
- functionalizing the CNTs by reducing the CNTs with alkali metal naphthalene complex or alkali metal benzophenone complex to produce negatively charged CNTs, and
- subjecting the negatively charged CNTs to nucleophilic substitution reaction in tetrahydrofuran with a compound carrying a functional group, said compound selected from at least one of:
- an epoxide, succinic anhydride and an organic halide selected from at least one of:
- 1- bromo (or iodo) dodecane, 1 bromoalcohol, 1-bromoethylene amine, bromocarboxylic acid, bromo-carboxylate ester, and epibromoanhydride, which compound reacts with the negatively charged CNT, whereby the compound chemically bonds to the CNT;
- or
- subjecting the negatively charged CNTs to polymerization by addition of polystyrene or methyl methacrylate and epoxide to produce a polymer grafted CNT.
A process of chemically attaching compounds to carbon nanotubes (CNT's) which comprises:
- functionalizing the CNTs by reducing the CNTs with alkali metal naphthalene complex or alkali metal benzophenone complex to produce negatively charged CNTs, and
- subjecting the negatively charged CNTs to nucleophilic substitution reaction with an epoxide;
- or
- subjecting the negatively charged CNTs to polymerization by addition of polystyrene or methyl methacrylate and epoxide to produce a polymer grafted CNT;
- and
- subjecting the CNT grafted with epoxide, polystyrene or polymethylmethacrylate to a step of further reduction of the grafted CNT to produce a grafted, reduced CNT, and then in a further step reacting the grafted, reduced CNT with another of epoxide, polystyrene or methylmethacrylate, to produce a bi- functionalized CNT.
