Abstract
A nitric oxide generator generates nitric oxide from a mixture of nitrogen and oxygen such as air treated by a pulsating electrical discharge. The desired concentration of nitric oxide is obtained by controlling at least one of a frequency of the pulsating electrical discharge and duration of each electrical discharge pulse.
Claims12
An apparatus for generating nitric oxide comprising:
- a reaction chamber enclosing two electrodes separated by a gap;
- a gas inlet port for introducing a gas flow containing oxygen and nitrogen into said reaction chamber;
- an electronic control circuit to generate an electrical discharge across the two electrodes through the gas flow, the electrical control circuit configured to control a pulse frequency of the electrical discharge and to control a pulse duration of the electrical discharge independent of the pulse frequency to produce a desired concentration of nitric oxide in the gas flow;
- and
- a gas outlet port for delivering the gas flow and nitric oxide for use thereof.
2 more elements
A method of generating nitric oxide comprising the steps of:
- (a) receiving a gas flow containing oxygen and nitrogen into a reaction chamber having a first and second electrodes separated by a gap;
- (b) promoting electrical discharges across the first and second electrodes through the gas flow while controlling a pulse frequency of the electrical discharges and a pulse duration of the electrical discharges to produce a predetermined concentration of nitric oxide in the gas flow;
- and
- (c) outputting the gas flow and nitric oxide from the reaction chamber for use by a biological system.
