Abstract
A system and method for processing digital images that efficiently buffers pixel data relating to digital images is disclosed. Pixel values are read from an image storage memory and temporarily stored in a buffer memory according to a non-raster pattern. The processing of pixels also occurs according to a more efficient non-raster patter.
Claims17
A controller for an electronic device to process digital image data of a digital image, the controller comprising:
- an interface to a memory comprising an image store memory and a buffer memory;
- wherein the controller is in communication with the memory via the interface, and the controller is configured to:
- select a first pixel stored in the image store memory corresponding to the digital image data;
- cause the first pixel and a first set of surrounding pixels surrounding the first pixel to be read from the image store memory in a non-raster pattern and stored in the buffer memory in the non-raster pattern, wherein the first set of surrounding pixels is less than pixels that comprise the digital image;
- adjust the first pixel stored in the buffer memory based on the first set of surrounding pixels stored in the buffer memory according to an image processing function;
- select a second pixel stored in the image store memory corresponding to the digital image data;
- cause the second pixel and a second set of surrounding pixels surrounding the second pixel to be read from the image store memory in the non-raster pattern and stored in the buffer memory in the non-raster pattern, wherein the second pixel is selected such that at least one pixel is commonly shared between the second set of surrounding pixels and the first set of surrounding pixels, wherein the second set of surrounding pixels is less than the pixels that comprise the digital image;
- adjust the second pixel stored in the buffer memory based on the second set of surrounding pixels stored in the buffer memory according to the image processing function;
- and
- control storage of the adjusted first pixel and the adjusted second pixel into the image store memory as part of an adjusted digital image.
A method for processing pixels of a digital image, the method comprising:
- selecting, by a controller, a first pixel stored in an image store memory in communication with the controller, the first pixel being a pixel of the digital image;
- causing, by the controller, the first pixel and a first set of surrounding pixels surrounding the first pixel to be read from the image store memory in a non-raster pattern and stored in a buffer memory in the non-raster pattern, wherein the first set of surrounding pixels is less than pixels that comprise the digital image;
- adjusting, by the controller, the first pixel stored in the buffer memory based on the first set of surrounding pixels stored in the buffer memory according to an image processing function;
- selecting, by the controller, a second pixel stored in the image store memory, the second pixel being a pixel of the digital image;
- causing, by the controller, the second pixel and a second set of surrounding pixels surrounding the second pixel to be read from the image store memory in the non-raster pattern and stored in the buffer memory in the non-raster pattern, wherein the second pixel is selected such that at least one pixel is commonly shared between the second set of surrounding pixels and the first set of surrounding pixels, wherein the second set of surrounding pixels is less than the pixels that comprise the digital image;
- adjusting the second pixel in the buffer memory based on the second set of surrounding pixels in the buffer memory according to the image processing function;
- and
- controlling storage of the adjusted first pixel and the adjusted second pixel into the image store memory as part of an adjusted digital image.
A non-transitory computer readable storage medium having processor executable instructions to:
- select a first pixel stored in the image store memory corresponding to the digital image data;
- cause the first pixel and a first set of surrounding pixels surrounding the first pixel to be read from the image store memory in a non-raster pattern and stored in the buffer memory in the non-raster pattern, wherein the first set of surrounding pixels is less than pixels that comprise the digital image;
- adjust the first pixel stored in the buffer memory by an adjustment value, wherein the adjustment value is based on a filtering array that includes the adjustment value for the first pixel when the first pixel is at a center of the filtering array;
- select a second pixel stored in the image store memory corresponding to the digital image data;
- cause the second pixel and a second set of surrounding pixels surrounding the second pixel to be read from the image store memory in the non-raster pattern and stored in the buffer memory in the non-raster pattern, wherein the second pixel is selected such that at least one pixel is commonly shared between the second set of surrounding pixels and the first set of surrounding pixels, wherein the second set of surrounding pixels is less than the pixels that comprise the digital image;
- adjust the second pixel stored in the buffer memory based on the second set of surrounding pixels stored in the buffer memory;
- and
- control storage of the adjusted first pixel and the adjusted second pixel into the image store memory as part of an adjusted digital image.
