Abstract
The present invention includes formulations and methods to reduce Cr(VI) contamination, in which the formulation comprises (1) a reactive reducing agent comprising at least one reducing chemical capable of reducing Cr(VI) to Cr(III); and (b) one or more solvents. Moreover, the present invention includes formulations to reduce Cr(VI) within the coating, and Cr(VI) reducing kits with at least one color reference tool for evaluating the process and/or completion of the Cr(VI) reduction.
Claims13
A formulation for reducing Cr(VI) within a Cr(VI) containing coating that is bonded to a substrate, comprising:
- a. at least one reducing chemical capable of reducing Cr(VI) to Cr(III), selected from a group consisting of ferrous salts, hydroxylamines and like, ascorbic acid, ascorbate, sorbate, sorbic acid, acetic acid, propionic acid, butylated hydroxytoluene, butylated hydroxyanisole, tert-butylhydroquinone, propyl gallate, glycolic acid (or hydroxyacetic acid) and other a-hydroxy acids (AHA), formic acid, other similar acids, and a mixture;
- and
- b. one or more solvents that are capable of helping the reducing chemical penetrate into the coating to reduce Cr(VI) within the coating;
- wherein the combined action of the reducing chemical and the solvent is able to penetrate into the coating to reduce Cr(VI) within the coating.
A formulation to reduce Cr(VI) within a coating that is bonded to a substrate, comprising:
- a. at least one reducing chemical capable of reducing Cr(VI) to Cr(III), selected from a group consisting of ferrous salts, hydroxylamines and like, ascorbate, sorbate, butylated hydroxytoluene, butylated hydroxyanisole, tert-butylhydroquinone, propyl gallate, and a mixture thereof;
- and
- b. one or more organic compounds selected from a group consisting of acetic acid, formic acid, ascorbic acid, sorbic acid, propionic acid, glycolic acid or hydroxyacetic acid, other a-hydroxy acid, and a mixture thereof;
- wherein the combined action of the reducing chemical and the organic compound is able to penetrate into the coating to reduce Cr(VI) within the coating.
