Abstract
A medical article having neutralized sulfonic acid groups on its surface, is disclosed. The article has reduced interaction with biological fluids such as insulin, human growth hormone and human serum albumin.
Claims13
An article comprising a thermoplastic neutralized sulfonated polycarbonate,
- wherein an interior surface of the article is functionalized with a sulfonate salt group containing a cation selected from the group consisting of sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and mixtures thereof, the sulfonate salt functionalized surface having at least 50% less adhesion of a biological fluid having a molecular weight of from 5,000 to 400,000 Daltons and selected from the group consisting of insulin, human growth hormone, human serum albumin, fibrinogen and mixtures thereof, than a surface that is not functionalized with a sulfonate salt group;
- wherein an exterior surface of the article is coated with a clear scratch-resistant coating;
- and
- wherein the interior surface is not clear coated;
- and
- wherein the article is a medical article selected from the group consisting of a blood bowl, syringe, dialysis unit, pump, or tube.
