Germ cell ablation compounds and uses thereof

A method of sterilizing fish comprising:

• contacting an embryonic fish with a compound of formula (I):
• wherein
• n is 0;
• R1 is hydrogen or a substituted or unsubstituted, branched or unbranched C1-C8 alkyl, or R1 is a linker to a solid support;
• R2 is hydrogen or a substituted or unsubstituted, branched or unbranched C1-C8 alkyl;
• and
• R3 is hydrogen, a substituted or unsubstituted aryl, or a substituted or unsubstituted alkylheteroaryl,
• with the provisos that:
• (i) when n is 0, R1 is ethyl and R2 is ethyl, then R3 is not 5-methylisoxazol-3-yl;
• (ii) when n is 0, R1 is ethyl and R2 is ethyl, then R3 is not 1-phenylehtyl;
• (iii) when n is 0, R1 is ethyl and R2 is ethyl, then R3 is not 4-(N-hydroxynitrosyl)phenyl;
• (iv) when n is 0, R1 is ethyl and R2 is H, then R3 is not 4-(N,N-dimethylcarbamoyl)phenyl;
• (v) when n is 0, R1 is ethyl and R2 is H, then R3 is not 4-carbamoylphenyl;
• and
• (vi) when n is 0, R1 is propyl and R2 is H, then R3 is not 1-phenylethyl;
• wherein said contacting begins prior to 4 hours post fertilization and wherein said contacting leads to sterilization of the fish upon developing into an adult.
