Abstract
Provided are sunflowers, parts thereof, cultures of, and seeds that are capable of producing sunflower oil that is low in saturated fat and, optionally, high in linoleic acid as well as associated methods.
Claims10
A seed of a sunflower cultivar, wherein the oil content of the seed comprises 10% or less total combined palmitic acid and stearic acid content and about 15% or more linoleic acid content, wherein the genome of the sunflower cultivar seed comprises the polynucleotide of SEQ ID NO:
- 13, and wherein the nucleotide at position 60 of the polynucleotide is a cytosine (C), the nucleotide at position 181 of the polynucleotide is a guanine (G), the nucleotide at position 258 of the polynucleotide is a cytosine (C), and the nucleotide at position 261 of the polynucleotide is a thymine (T).
A sunflower inbred plant stabilized for seed oil comprising 12% or less total combined palmitic acid and stearic acid content and about 15% or more linoleic acid content, wherein the genome of the sunflower inbred plant and seed obtained thereof comprises the polynucleotide of SEQ ID NO:
- 18, and wherein the nucleotide at position 299 of the polynucleotide is an adenine (A), the nucleotide at position 364 of the polynucleotide is a cytosine (C), the nucleotide at position 439 of the polynucleotide is a cytosine (C), and the nucleotide at position 457 of the polynucleotide is an adenine (A).
