## Abstract

A watercraft immobilizing apparatus and system for a marine vessel to passively defend against an attacking engine-powered watercraft includes a towed array of entanglement lines. The entanglement lines can be provided on and administered from removable/replaceable storage cartridges mountable on and/or deployed via davits, outriggers, paravanes, and/or weighted submersible rollers to foul and immobilize propellers and engine cooling water intakes of encroaching watercraft.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A marine piracy prevention system for a marine vessel, the system comprising separate entanglement lines; and at least one submersible structure suspendable at an assailable face of the vessel, the at least one submersible structure being configured to guide the entanglement lines such that the entanglement lines stream proximate the surface of water generally aft of the vessel during travel of the vessel and are operative to disable a propulsion system of an approaching surface watercraft.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein the entanglement lines comprise primary lines, each of the primary lines having at least one secondary line branching therefrom.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein the entanglement lines are operative to disable the propulsion system of an approaching surface watercraft by at least one of entangling a propeller of the watercraft and fouling an engine intake of the watercraft.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1 further comprising at least one bracket coupled to the aft bulwark of the vessel.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The system of claim 4, wherein the at least one submersible structure is suspendable from the at least one bracket.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein the at least one submersible structure comprises dual rollers.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The system of claim 6, wherein the at least one submersible structure is configured to guide the entanglement lines by passing the entanglement lines between the dual rollers.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1 further comprising a cartridge mountable to the stern of the watercraft and configured to store and deploy the entanglement lines.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The system of claim 8, wherein the cartridge comprises a roller unit.

### Claim 10

A marine piracy prevention system for a marine vessel, the system comprising separate entanglement lines, a cartridge mountable to the stern of the watercraft, the cartridge being dividable into sections, each of the sections being configured to store and deploy a predefined number of the entanglement lines; and at least one submersible structure suspendable at an assailable face of the vessel, the at least one submersible structure being configured to guide the entanglement lines such that the entanglement lines stream proximate the surface of water generally aft of the vessel during travel of the vessel and are operative to disable a propulsion system of an approaching surface watercraft.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein the entanglement lines are fitted with at least one of finned floats and finned spreaders.

### Claim 12

A cartridge mountable to a marine vessel, the cartridge comprising a storage unit storing separate entanglement lines, the storage unit being configured to administer the entanglement lines such that the entanglement lines stream proximate the surface of water during travel of the vessel and are operative to disable a propulsion system of an approaching surface watercraft, the storage unit being divided into at least two sections, each of the at least two sections storing a predefined number of the entanglement lines.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The cartridge of claim 12, wherein the storage unit comprises a roller.

### Claim 14 (depends on 12)

The cartridge of claim 12, wherein the entanglement lines are constructed as primary lines, each of the primary lines having at least one secondary line branching therefrom.

### Claim 15

A marine piracy prevention system for a marine vessel, the system comprising at least one boom coupled to a first portion of the vessel; a floatable device coupled to both the at least one boom and a second portion of the vessel; and separate entanglement lines coupled to the at least one boom, the entanglement lines being configured to extend and stream proximate the surface of water during travel of the vessel and operative to disable a propulsion system of an approaching surface watercraft.

### Claim 16 (depends on 15)

The system of claim 15, wherein the at least one boom is at least one of a wire and a chain.

### Claim 17 (depends on 15)

The system of claim 15, wherein the first portion comprises one of a forward portion and an aft portion of the vessel, and wherein the second portion comprises a side of the vessel.

### Claim 18 (depends on 15)

The system of claim 15, wherein the floatable device is coupled to the second portion of the vessel via at least one recoverable link.

### Claim 19 (depends on 18)

The system of claim 18, wherein the at least one recoverable link is transverse to the second portion of the vessel.

### Claim 20 (depends on 15)

The system of claim 15, wherein the floatable device is a floated paravane.
