## Abstract

Implantable biocompatible polymeric medical devices include a substrate with an acid or base-modified surface which is subsequently modified to include click reactive members.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method of preparing a medical device having an activated surface, the method comprising:
acid-treating at least a portion of a surface of a polymeric medical device to obtain hydrolysis; and
attaching one or more click reactive members to the acid-treated surface of the medical device, wherein the click reactive members are selected from the group consisting of thiols, azides, alkynes, and alkenes.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein the acid is selected from the group consisting of HCl, HCl3, HCl4, H2SO3, H2SO4, H3PO4, HI, HIO3, HBr, lactic acid and glycolic acid.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein the click reactive member is selected from the group consisting of thiols and alkenes.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein the click reactive members are selected from the group consisting of azides and alkynes.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein the medical device is selected from the group consisting of monofilament sutures, multifilament sutures, surgical meshes, ligatures, sutures, staples, slings, patches, foams, pellicles, films, barriers, stents, catheters, and inflatable balloons.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein the medical device is a surgical mesh.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein the medical device comprises a biodegradable polymer selected from collagen, cellulose, poly (amino acids), polysaccharides, hyaluronic acid, copolymers and combinations thereof.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein the medical device comprises a non-degradable polymer selected from fluorinated polymers, polyolefins, polyamides, polyurethanes, silicones, polyaryletherketone, copolymers and combinations thereof.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein acid-treating at least a portion of a surface of a medical device is conducted at a temperature between 0° C. and a glass transition temperature of a material of the medical device.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein the medical device comprises polybutester.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein the medical device comprises nylon.

### Claim 12 (depends on 1)

The method according to claim 1, wherein the medical device comprises ultra high molecular weight polyethylene.
