## Abstract

A novel maize variety designated X13F228W and seed, plants and plant parts thereof are produced by crossing inbred maize varieties. Methods for producing a maize plant by crossing hybrid maize variety X13F228W with another maize plant are disclosed. Methods for producing a maize plant containing in its genetic material one or more traits introgressed into X13F228W through backcross conversion and/or transformation, and to the maize seed, plant and plant part produced thereby. This invention relates to the maize variety X13F228W, the seed, the plant produced from the seed, and variants, mutants, and minor modifications of maize variety X13F228W. This invention further relates to methods for producing maize varieties derived from maize variety X13F228W.

## Claims

### Claim 1

An F1 hybrid maize variety X13F228W seed, representative F1 hybrid seed produced by crossing a first plant of variety PH24KA with a second plant of variety PH1K8C, wherein representative seed of said varieties PH24KA and PH1K8C have been deposited under ATCC Accession Numbers PTA-123171 and PTA-120726, respectively.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The hybrid maize variety X13F228W seed of claim 1, further comprising a seed treatment.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

A method comprising cleaning the hybrid maize variety X13F228W seed of claim 1.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

A method for producing nucleic acids, the method comprising isolating nucleic acids from the hybrid maize variety X13F228W seed of claim 1.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

A plant, plant part, or plant cell produced by growing the hybrid maize variety X13F228W seed of claim 1, the plant, plant part or plant cell comprising at least one F1 hybrid maize variety X13F228W cell.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

A method for producing nucleic acids, the method comprising isolating nucleic acids from the plant, plant part, or plant cell of claim 5.

### Claim 7 (depends on 5)

A method of producing a commodity plant product comprising starch, syrup, silage, fat or protein, the method comprising producing the commodity plant product from the plant or plant part of claim 5.

### Claim 8 (depends on 5)

A method for producing a second maize plant, the method comprising applying plant breeding techniques to the maize plant or plant part of claim 5 to produce the second maize plant.

### Claim 9 (depends on 5)

A method comprising:
(a) crossing the maize plant or plant part of claim 5 with itself or a different plant to produce progeny seed;
(b) growing the progeny seed to produce a progeny plant and crossing the progeny plant with itself or a different plant to produce further progeny seed; and
(c) repeating step (b) for at least an additional two generations to produce a second maize plant.

### Claim 10 (depends on 5)

A method for producing a second maize plant, the method comprising doubling haploid seed generated from a cross of the maize plant or plant part of claim 5 with a different maize plant.

### Claim 11

An F1 hybrid maize variety X13F228W seed further comprising a locus conversion, the converted seed being produced by crossing a first plant of variety PH24KA with a second plant of variety PH1K8C; representative seed of said varieties PH24KA and PH1K8C having been deposited under ATCC Accession Numbers PTA-123171 and PTA-120726, respectively; wherein at least one of said varieties PH24KA and PH1K8C further comprises a locus conversion and wherein the converted seed produces a plant having otherwise essentially the same morphological and physiological characteristics as maize variety X13F228W listed in Table 1 when grown under the same environmental conditions.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The converted seed of claim 11, further comprising a seed treatment.

### Claim 13 (depends on 11)

A method comprising cleaning the converted seed of claim 11.

### Claim 14 (depends on 11)

The converted seed of claim 11, wherein the locus conversion confers a property selected from the group consisting of male sterility, site-specific recombination, abiotic stress tolerance, altered phosphorus, altered antioxidants, altered fatty acids, altered essential amino acids, altered carbohydrates, herbicide tolerance, insect resistance and disease resistance.

### Claim 15 (depends on 11)

A method for producing nucleic acids, the method comprising isolating nucleic acids from the hybrid maize variety X13F228W seed of claim 11.

### Claim 16 (depends on 11)

A plant, plant part, or plant cell produced by growing the hybrid maize variety X13F228W seed of claim 11, the plant, plant part or plant cell comprising at least one F1 hybrid maize variety X13F228W cell.

### Claim 17 (depends on 16)

A method for producing nucleic acids, the method comprising isolating nucleic acids from the plant, plant part, or plant cell of claim 16.

### Claim 18 (depends on 16)

A method of producing a commodity plant product comprising starch, syrup, silage, fat or protein, the method comprising producing the commodity plant product from the plant or plant part of claim 16.

### Claim 19 (depends on 16)

A method for producing a second maize plant, the method comprising applying plant breeding techniques to the plant or plant part of claim 16 to produce the second maize plant.

### Claim 20 (depends on 16)

A method for producing a second maize plant, the method comprising doubling haploid seed generated from a cross of the maize plant or plant part of claim 16 with a different maize plant.
