## Abstract

Improved methods for acquiring, storing, transmitting and displaying stereoscopic images are disclosed. Some of the benefits of these include simultaneous left/right view acquisition, transmitting and displaying images remotely from a stereoscopic camera, stereoscopic digital zooming wherein a subset of pixels is displayed, pan-tilt-zoom choosing of the displayed image, and interactive adjustment of images. Methods of using embodiments of the disclosed apparatus are capable of producing high resolution, real-time, stereoscopic image data while avoiding or mitigating the deleterious effects of spurious parallax.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method for acquiring at least one stereoscopic image of an object, the method comprising the steps of:
(a) providing at least one image sensor comprising pixel cells configured to generate pixel data;
(b) providing at least one optical instrument comprising at least one channel comprising an optical path and at least one optical component wherein said at least one optical component is configured to illuminate at least a portion of the pixel cells of the at least one image sensor, wherein the at least one optical instrument is capable of providing a plurality of optical views corresponding to a left view and a right view of the at least one stereoscopic image of the object;
(c) generating, via an acquisition controller, at least one data stream corresponding to at least one pixel data for each view of the plurality of optical views from the instrument wherein at least one first data stream corresponding to the left view is simultaneously generated with at least one second data stream corresponding to the respective right view;
(d) combining, via a data processor, the at least one first and second data streams into a third, single data stream wherein timing among the first and second data streams is known and maintained, wherein the single data stream is effective to represent the at least one stereoscopic image of the object in real time; and
(e) transmitting, via a first interface, the single data stream.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising the steps of:
receiving, via an image processing unit communicatively coupled to the first interface, the single data stream corresponding to the pixel data representative of the plurality of optical views of a first stereoscopic image of the object;
choosing, via the image processing unit, a first subset of the pixel data representative of at least a portion of the at least one left view and a corresponding second subset of the pixel data representative of at least a portion of the at least one right view; and
outputting, via a second interface, said subsets to at least one stereoscopic display configured to display the first subset and the second subset of the pixel data as a second stereoscopic image of the object.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2 wherein the second stereoscopic image is representative of a magnification of at least a portion of the first stereoscopic image.

### Claim 4 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2 wherein the image processing unit is configured to allow a user to control the choice of at least one of the first and second subsets of pixel data.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The method of claim 4 wherein the at least one stereoscopic display is configured to allow the user to control the choice of at least one of the first and second subsets of pixel data while viewing the display.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The method of claim 5 wherein the at least one stereoscopic display is further configured to allow the user to control the choice of at least one of the first and second subsets of pixel data while viewing the display and at least a portion of the object.

### Claim 7 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2 wherein one or more of the at least one stereoscopic display is head-mounted.

### Claim 8 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2 wherein the step of choosing is performed to automatically equalize the vertical position of the object in the second stereoscopic image.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of storing, via a storage device communicatively coupled to the first interface, the single data stream.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The method of claim 9, further comprising the steps of:
retrieving, via a second data processor communicatively coupled to the storage device, the single data stream; and
transmitting, via a third interface, the single data stream.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

The method of claim 10 wherein at least one of the first and third interface is connected to a network.

### Claim 12 (depends on 10)

The method of claim 10 wherein at least one of the first and third interface is wireless.

### Claim 13 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of compressing the single data stream.

### Claim 14

A method for acquiring at least one stereoscopic image of an object, the method comprising the steps of:
(a) acquiring, via an optical instrument having at least one optical path, at least one optical view corresponding to a left view and a right view of the at least one stereoscopic image of the object;
(b) providing a stereoscopic image acquisition device comprising at least one optical sensor in the at least one optical path, wherein the at least one optical sensor is effective to generate at least one data stream corresponding to at least one image data for each view of the at least one optical view from the instrument;
(c) generating at least one data stream corresponding to at least one image data for each view of the at least one optical view from the instrument wherein at least one first data stream corresponding to the left view is simultaneously generated with at least one second data stream corresponding to the respective right view;
