Abstract
A method and apparatus for performing a read/write process on a recording medium having a defect, the method including determining an area of a recording medium, in which a defect, greater than a first set threshold, occurring in units of tracks, to be a massive defective area; adjusting a first parameter representing a logical track length, based on a size of a defect occurring in each track included in the massive defective area; and performing the read/write process on the recording medium by using the adjusted first parameter.
Claims17
A method of performing a read/write process on a recording medium, the method comprising:
- determining an area of the recording medium containing a defect greater than a set first threshold measured in units of tracks to be a massive defective area, wherein the set first threshold is set to a track length corresponding to a time needed for performing track switching on the recording medium;
- calculating a first parameter representing a logical track length of tracks included in the massive defective area by subtracting a length in a track-wise direction of the massive defective area from a physical track length of the tracks;
- and
- performing the read/write process on the recording medium by using the first parameter.
A storage device comprising:
- a recording medium comprising a plurality of tracks that store data;
- a media interface that writes information to, or reads information from, the recording medium;
- and
- a processor that controls the media interface to write data to, or read data from, a target track of the recording medium,
- wherein, if a massive defective area in which a defect greater than a first set threshold measured in units of tracks is present in the recording medium, the first set threshold being set to a track length corresponding to a time needed for performing track switching on the recording medium, then the processor is configured to calculate a first parameter representing a logical track length of tracks included in the massive defective area by subtracting a length in a track-wise direction of the massive defective area from a physical track length of the tracks, the first parameter utilized in the reading and recording of information from the recording medium.
A method comprising:
- detecting that a track of a recording medium includes a defect greater than a first threshold, the defect occupying a defective area of the track;
- determining a length in a track-wise direction of the defective area;
- calculating a logical track length in the track-wise direction of the track by subtracting the length of the defective area from a total physical length in the track-wise direction of the track;
- assigning a logical block addressing scheme to the track wherein no logical addresses are assigned to any data sectors in the defective area;
- reading or writing to the track using the assigned logical block addressing scheme;
- switching a read/write head from the track to an adjacent track;
- and
- controlling the switching to start while a position of the read/write head corresponds to the defective area.
