Abstract
Mass transfer packing with a minimal surface or a triply periodic minimal surface which enables significantly improved performance for separation and mixing applications particularly with respect to distillation, liquid-liquid contacting, and heat exchange applications.
Claims15
A mass transfer packing unit, comprising:
- an inlet for receiving a fluid disposed on a first side of a mass transfer column;
- an outlet for discharging a product disposed on a second side of the mass transfer column, wherein the first side and the second side define opposite ends of the mass transfer column;
- and
- a minimal surface area material located between the inlet and the outlet;
- the minimal surface area material having a minimal surface area;
- the minimal surface area having a mean curvature of zero at each point on the minimal surface area;
- the minimal surface area material being in fluid communication with the inlet and the outlet for processing the fluid into the product.

A mass transfer packing unit, comprising:
- an inlet for receiving a fluid disposed on a first side of a mass transfer column;
- an outlet for discharging a product disposed on second side of the mass transfer column, wherein the first side and the second side define opposite ends of the mass transfer column;
- a volume located within the mass transfer packing unit;
- a minimal surface area material located between the inlet and the outlet,
- the minimal surface area material having a minimal surface area;
- the minimal surface area having a mean curvature of zero at each point on the minimal surface area;
- the minimal surface area material dividing the volume into a first and a second interpenetrating network;
- and
- the minimal surface area material being in fluid communication with the inlet and the outlet for processing the fluid into the product.
