## Abstract

Systems and methods for continuous measurement of an analyte in a host are provided. The system generally includes a continuous analyte sensor configured to continuously measure a concentration of analyte in a host and a sensor electronics module physically connected to the continuous analyte sensor during sensor use, wherein the sensor electronics module is further configured to directly wirelessly communicate sensor information to one or more display devices. Establishment of communication between devices can involve using a unique identifier associated with the sensor electronics module to authenticate communication. Times tracked at the sensor electronics module and the display module can be at different resolutions, and the different resolutions can be translated to facilitate communication. In addition, the frequency of establishing communication channels between the sensor electronics module and the display devices can vary depending upon whether reference calibration information is being updated.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method for wirelessly exchanging glucose information between a first communication device associated with a continuous glucose sensor and a second communication device associated with a glucose information display device, the method comprising:
exchanging information related to authentication between the first communication device and the second communication device; wherein the exchange of the authentication information includes determining by the second communication device whether a first device ID that is transmitted by the first communication device matches a second device ID that is stored at the second communication device;
opening a time window periodically for communication between the first communication device and the second communication device at a first rate; detecting an error at the first communication device;
upon the detection of the error, transmitting a request for reference information from the first communication device to the second communication device and opening the time window between the first communication device and the second communication device at a second rate, wherein the second rate is faster than the first rate;
receiving by the first communication device the reference information responsive to the request from the second communication device; and
resuming the opening of the time window at the first rate subsequent to the receipt of the reference information by the first communication device from the second communication device.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the detection of the error by the first communication device is based on analysis of sensor data indicating malfunction of the continuous glucose sensor.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the detection of the error by the first communication device is based on artifacts in sensor signal data.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising maintaining the opening of the time window at the second rate until expiration of a predetermined time.

### Claim 5

A system for wirelessly exchanging glucose information between devices, the system comprising:
a sensor electronics module operatively coupled to a continuous glucose sensor, the sensor electronics module configured to wirelessly transmit information related to authentication; and
a display device comprising a display electronics and a user interface, the user interface configured to receive user input and the display device configured to display glucose information, wherein the display electronics are configured to wirelessly receive the authentication information; wherein the receipt of the authentication information by the display device includes determination of whether a first device ID that is transmitted by the sensor electronics module matches a second device ID that is stored at the display device;
wherein the system synchronizes the sensor electronics module and the display device to open a time window periodically for communication between the sensor electronics module and the display device at a first rate; and
the sensor electronics module is configured to detect an error, and upon the detection of the error, transmit a request for reference information to the display device; and
wherein the system further synchronizes the sensor electronics module and the display device to open the time window between the sensor electronics module and the display device at a second rate, wherein the second rate is faster than the first rate;
wherein the sensor electronics module is further configured to receive the reference information responsive to the request from the display device; and
wherein the system is further configured to synchronize the sensor electronics module and the display device to resume the opening of the time window at the first rate subsequent to the receipt of the reference information by the sensor electronics module from the display device.
