Abstract
Disclosed is a method for selectively binding and separating phosphate anions from a liquid medium by providing a cross-linked molecularly imprinted polymer including cross-linked chitosan having selective binding affinity for phosphate ions, phosphate containing molecules, or a combination of both.
Claims3
A method for selectively binding and separating phosphate anions from a liquid medium, said method comprising:
- (a) providing a cross-linked molecularly imprinted polymer, the cross-linked molecularly imprinted polymer comprising:
- cross-linked molecularly imprinted chitosan having complementary molecular cavities that have a selective binding affinity for phosphate ions, phosphate-containing molecules, or a combination of both;
- and
- (b) contacting the cross-linked molecularly imprinted polymer with the liquid medium, wherein any phosphate ions, phosphate-containing molecules, or a combination of both present in the liquid medium are selectively removed from the liquid medium and sequestered in the cross-linked molecularly imprinted polymer.
