## Abstract

A novel maize variety designated PH1MJ9 and seed, plants and plant parts thereof. Methods for producing a maize plant that comprise crossing maize variety PH1MJ9 with another maize plant. Methods for producing a maize plant containing in its genetic material one or more traits introgressed into PH1MJ9 through backcross conversion and/or transformation, and to the maize seed, plant and plant part produced thereby. Hybrid maize seed, plant or plant part produced by crossing the variety PH1MJ9 or a locus conversion of PH1MJ9 with another maize variety.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A seed, plant, plant part, or plant cell of inbred maize variety PH1MJ9, representative seed of the variety having been deposited under ATCC accession number PTA-123178.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The plant part of claim 1, wherein the plant part is an ovule or pollen.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

A maize seed produced by crossing the plant or plant part of claim 1 with a different maize plant.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

A maize plant or plant part produced by growing the maize seed of claim 3.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

A method for producing a second maize plant, the method comprising applying plant breeding techniques to the plant or plant part of claim 4 to produce the second maize plant.

### Claim 6 (depends on 4)

A method for producing a second maize plant or plant part, the method comprising doubling haploid seed generated from a cross of the plant or plant part of claim 4 with an inducer variety, thereby producing the second maize plant or plant part.

### Claim 7 (depends on 4)

A method of making a commodity plant product comprising silage, starch, fat, syrup or protein, the method comprising processing the maize plant or plant part of claim 4, thereby producing the commodity plant product.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

A method of producing a maize plant derived from the variety PH1MJ9, comprising:
a) crossing the plant of claim 1 with itself or a second plant to produce progeny seed;
b) growing the progeny seed to produce a progeny plant and crossing the progeny plant with itself or a different plant to produce further progeny seed; and
c) repeating step (b) for at least one additional generation to produce a maize plant derived from the variety PH1MJ9.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The derived maize plant produced by the method of claim 8, wherein the derived maize plant has essentially the same morphological and physiological characteristics listed in Table 1 as inbred maize variety PH1MJ9 when grown under the same environmental conditions.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

A method comprising generating a molecular marker profile from nucleic acids isolated from the seed, plant, plant part, or plant cell of claim 1.

### Claim 11

A converted seed, plant, plant part or plant cell of inbred maize variety PH1MJ9, representative seed of the maize variety PH1MJ9 having been deposited under ATCC accession number PTA-123178, wherein the converted seed, plant, plant part or plant cell comprises a locus conversion, and wherein the plant or a plant grown from the converted seed, plant part or plant cell comprises the locus conversion and otherwise has essentially the same morphological and physiological characteristics of maize variety PH1MJ9 listed in Table 1 when grown under the same environmental conditions.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The converted seed, plant, plant part or plant cell of claim 11, wherein the locus conversion confers a property selected from the group consisting of male sterility, site-specific recombination, abiotic stress tolerance, altered phosphorus, altered antioxidants, altered fatty acids, altered essential amino acids, altered carbohydrates, herbicide tolerance, insect resistance and disease resistance.

### Claim 13 (depends on 11)

A maize seed produced by crossing the plant or plant part of claim 11 with a different maize plant.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

A maize plant or plant part produced by growing the seed of claim 13.

### Claim 15 (depends on 14)

A method for producing a second maize plant, the method comprising applying plant breeding techniques to the plant or plant part of claim 14 to produce the second maize plant.

### Claim 16 (depends on 14)

A method for producing a second maize plant or plant part, the method comprising doubling haploid seed generated from a cross of the plant or plant part of claim 14 with an inducer variety, thereby producing the second maize plant or plant part.

### Claim 17 (depends on 14)

A method of making a commodity plant product comprising silage, starch, fat, syrup or protein, the method comprising processing the maize plant or plant part of claim 14, thereby producing the commodity plant product.

### Claim 18 (depends on 11)

A method of producing a maize plant derived from the variety PH1MJ9, comprising:
a) crossing the plant of claim 11 with itself or a second plant to produce progeny seed;
b) growing the progeny seed to produce a progeny plant and crossing the progeny plant with itself or a different plant to produce further progeny seed; and
c) repeating step (b) for at least one additional generation to produce a maize plant derived from the variety PH1MJ9.

### Claim 19 (depends on 18)

The derived maize plant produced by the method of claim 18, wherein the derived maize plant has essentially the same morphological and physiological characteristics listed in Table 1 as inbred maize variety PH1MJ9 when grown under the same environmental conditions.

### Claim 20 (depends on 11)

A method comprising generating a molecular marker profile from nucleic acids isolated from the seed, plant, plant part, or plant cell of claim 11.
