Abstract
A Mobility Management Entity (MME) having MSC functionality implemented therein, performs a scheme of MTC device triggering has been conceived. A PS and CS combined location update is sent to the HSS/HLR by means of piggybacking of CS domain information over an interface between the MME and the HSS/HLR as part of a “combined” EPS/IMSI attach procedure or a “combined” TA/LA update procedure. The, SMS signaling is received from an SMS-SC (GMSC/IWMSC) to transfer an SMS message for an LTE-only device or a single-mode E-UTRAN device. Here, the SMS signaling is received from the SMS-SC (GMSC/IWMSC) via an interworking function (IWF) that provides interworking between a MAP interface and a Diameter interface. As a result, M2M or MTC devices can be supported for an LTE network or the like.
Claims18
A method of handling signals for Short Messaging Service (SMS) between a wireless network and a mobile station (MS), the wireless network including a Mobility Management Entity (MME) and a Home Subscriber Server/Home Location Register (HSS/HLR), the MME having Mobile Switching Center (MSC) functionality supporting the SMS, the method comprising:
- receiving, from the MS by the MME, information as part of a combined Tracking Area (TA) and Location Area (LA) update procedure for Packet Switched (PS) and Circuit Switched (CS) domains;
- sending, to the HSS/HLR from the MME based on the received information, a location update request over an S6a interface configured between the MME and the HSS/HLR for the combined Tracking Area (TA) and Location Area (LA) update procedure, the location update request including:
- an SMS-only indicator indicating that the location update request is an SMS-only update request, and
- a flag field indicating that the MME is capable of SMS transfer without establishing association with an MSC;
- and
- receiving, at the MME from an SMS Service Center (SMS-SC) or a SMS Gateway MSC/Interworking MSC (SMS-GMSC/IWMSC) in communication with the HSS/HLR, SMS signaling based on the location update request.
A Mobility Management Entity (MME) for Short Messaging Service (SMS) in a wireless network including a Home Subscriber Server/Home Location Register (HSS/HLR), the MME having Mobile Switching Center (MSC) functionality supporting the SMS and comprising:
- a transceiver configured to:
- receive, from a mobile station (MS), information as part of a combined Tracking Area (TA) and Location Area (LA) update procedure for Packet Switched (PS) and Circuit Switched (CS) domains;
- send, to the HSS/HLR from the MME based on the received information, a location update request over an S6a interface configured between the MME and the HSS/HLR for the combined Tracking Area (TA) and Location Area (LA) update procedure, the location update request including:
- an SMS-only indicator indicating that the location update request is an SMS-only update request, and
- a flag field indicating that the MME is capable of SMS transfer without establishing association with an MSC;
- and
- receive, at the MME from an SMS Service Center (SMS-SC) or a SMS Gateway MSC/Interworking MSC (SMS-GMSC/IWMSC) in communication with the HSS/HLR, SMS signaling based on the location update request.
