Abstract
An electrode for a biplate assembly includes an active material made from a compressed powder 11, and a non-metal carrier 10. A biplate assembly 20 includes electrodes 27, 28 each having a non-metal carrier 10. A method is disclosed for manufacturing an electrode 13 having a non-metal carrier 10. An apparatus 30 is disclosed for manufacturing such an electrode 13. A bipolar battery includes at least one such an electrode 13. The non-metal carrier 10 is preferably a non-conductive carrier.
Claims12
An electrode for a biplate assembly in a bipolar battery, said electrode comprising:
- an active material made from an active powder;
- and
- a non-metal carrier;
- wherein said electrode is formed by compressing said active powder onto said non-metal carrier to create said active material, said non-metal carrier is provided with a structure that allows at least some amount of the active powder to migrate completely through the non-metal carrier when the electrode is formed, said non-metal carrier being a structural part of the electrode;
- wherein said non-metal carrier is an electrically non-conductive carrier;
- and
- wherein said non-metal carrier has a random structure of polymer fibers.
A biplate assembly for a bipolar battery comprising:
- a biplate;
- a positive electrode including a positive active material made from a positive active powder;
- and
- a negative electrode including a negative active material made from a negative active powder, said negative active material being opposite to said positive active material;
- wherein each electrode includes a non-metal carrier being a structural part of the electrode, and each electrode is formed by compressing said positive or negative active powder onto said non-metal carrier to create said positive or negative active material, said non-metal carrier is provided with a structure that allows at least some amount of the positive or negative active powder to migrate completely through the non-metal carrier when the electrode is formed, and said non-metal carrier has a random structure of polymer fibers.
A bipolar battery comprising:
- a housing;
- a positive end terminal having a positive electrode;
- a negative end terminal having a negative electrode;
- at least one biplate assembly comprising a negative electrode, a biplate, and a positive electrode;
- and
- a separator containing electrolyte arranged between adjacent positive and negative electrodes;
- wherein at least one of said positive and said negative electrodes in said at least one biplate assembly includes a non-metal carrier being a structural part of the electrode, which is formed by compressing a positive or negative active powder onto said non-metal carrier to create a positive or negative active material, said non-metal carrier is provided with a structure that allows at least some amount of the positive or negative active powder to migrate completely through the non-metal carrier when the electrode is formed, and said non—metal carrier has a random structure of polymer fibers.
