Abstract
A shiftable memory supporting bimodal data storage includes a memory having built-in shifting capability to shift a contiguous subset of data stored in the memory from a first location to a second location within the memory. The shiftable memory further includes a bimodal data storage operator to operate on a data structure comprising the contiguous subset of data words and to provide in-place insertion of a data value using the built-in shifting capability.
Claims14
A shiftable memory supporting bimodal data storage comprising:
- a memory to store data words, the memory providing built-in shifting capability to shift a contiguous subset of the data words from a first location to a second location within the memory, the built-in shifting capability to shift only data words of the contiguous subset having a size that is smaller than a total size of the memory;
- and
- a bimodal data storage operator to operate on a data structure comprising the contiguous subset of data words and to provide in-place insertion of a data value using the built-in shifting capability and provide in-place deletion of an existing data value by replacing the existing data value with dummy data representing a hole in the data structure,
- wherein a data word comprises data values.
A shiftable memory providing bimodal storage support comprising:
- a shiftable memory comprising a plurality of memory cells with built-in data shifting capability to shift a contiguous subset of data stored in the memory cells from a first location to a second location within the shiftable memory, a size of the contiguous subset being smaller than a total size of the shiftable memory;
- a control flag associated with a data unit of a plurality of units of data in a data structure comprising the contiguous subset of data, the control flag to indicate a storage mode of the data unit, wherein the built-in data shifting capability in conjunction with the control flag facilitate one or both of in-place insertion of data in the data structure and in-place deletion of data in the data structure.
A method of bimodal storage using shiftable memory, the method comprising:
- defining a data structure comprising data values stored in data words in the shiftable memory;
- the shiftable memory providing built-in shifting capability to shift a contiguous subset of the data words in the data structure from a first location to a second location within the shiftable memory, a size of the contiguous subset of data words being less than a total size of the shiftable memory;
- and
- executing a bimodal data storage operator to provide one or both of in-place insertion of a data value into the data structure using the built-in shifting capability and in-place deletion of an existing data value in the data structure by replacing the existing data value with dummy data representing a hole in the data structure.
