Abstract
In embodiments of the present invention improved capabilities are described for a three-dimensional Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tag structure with an opening though the structure.
Claims12
A Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tag, comprising:
- an RFID integrated circuit having a first electrical terminal and a second electrical terminal;
- a substrate configurable into a three-dimensional structure, the three-dimensional structure having a first side in a first plane having a first substrate opening and a second side in a second plane having a second substrate opening opposing the first substrate opening;
- and
- a conductor applied to the substrate having a first portion connected to the first electrical terminal of the RFID integrated circuit and a second portion connected to the second electrical terminal of the RFID integrated circuit, wherein the conductor functions as an antenna when an electrical signal is applied to the first and second electrical terminals,
- wherein the conductor forms a continuous conductive path from the first electrical terminal across the two portions to the second electrical terminal while traversing the first side of the three-dimensional structure and the second side of the three-dimensional structure,
- wherein the conductor further comprises a first conductor opening corresponding to the first substrate opening in the first plane of the first side of the three-dimensional structure and a second conductor opening corresponding to the second substrate opening in the second plane of the second side of the three-dimensional structure.

A method, comprising:
- configuring a substrate into a three-dimensional structure, the three-dimensional structure having a first side in a first plane having a first substrate opening and a second side in a second plane having a second substrate opening opposing the first substrate opening;
- and
- applying a conductor to the substrate having a first portion connected to a first electrical terminal of a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) integrated circuit and a second portion connected to a second electrical terminal of the RFID integrated circuit, wherein the conductor functions as an antenna when an electrical signal is applied to the first and second electrical terminals,
- wherein the conductor forms a continuous conductive path from the first electrical terminal across the two portions to the second electrical terminal while traversing the first side of the three-dimensional structure and the second side of the three-dimensional structure,
- wherein the conductor further comprises a first conductor opening corresponding to the first substrate opening in the first plane of the first side of the three-dimensional structure and a second conductor opening corresponding to the second substrate opening in the second plane of the second side of the three-dimensional structure.
