Abstract
Biomass feedstocks (e.g., plant biomass, animal biomass, and municipal waste biomass) are processed to produce useful products, such as fuels. For example, systems are described that can convert feedstock materials to a sugar solution, especially, xylose, which can then be chemically converted to furfural and furfural-derived products.
Claims24
A method for producing furfuryl alcohol comprising:
- irradiating biomass to reduce the recalcitrance of the biomass;
- saccharifying the irradiated biomass with one or more enzymes to produce a first sugar composition comprising xylose and glucose;
- fermenting the first sugar composition to produce a second sugar composition comprising xylose and glucose, wherein the concentration of xylose in the second sugar composition is increased relative to the first sugar composition;
- isolating the xylose from the second sugar composition by simulated moving bed chromatography;
- converting the isolated xylose to furfural;
- and
- reducing the furfural to furfuryl alcohol.
