Abstract
A self-closing device for implantation within a patient's body includes base material including an inner surface area for securing the base material to a tissue structure, and a plurality of support elements surrounding or embedded in the base material. The support elements are separable laterally within a plane of the base material to accommodate creating an opening through the base material for receiving one or more instruments through the base material, and biased to return laterally towards a relaxed state for self-closing the opening after removing the one or more instruments. The device may be provided as a patch or integrally attached to a tubular graft or in various shapes.
Claims22
An access port for a tubular structure within a patient's body, comprising:
- a port body formed from nonporous elastomeric material comprising a first end, a second end, a longitudinal axis extending therebetween, and a “C” shaped continuous wall including inner and outer surfaces without any openings extending between the first and second ends and defining opposite side edges that extend uninterrupted between the first and second ends;
- a plurality of bands embedded in the elastomeric material, each band comprising a plurality of struts including spaces therebetween, the struts being separable laterally within a plane of the wall to accommodate creating a passage through the port body when an instrument is introduced through the elastomeric material and resiliently biased to return laterally when the instrument is removed to substantially close the passage to automatically substantially seal any passage created through the elastomeric material by a needle or other instrument;
- and
- fabric surrounding the inner and outer surfaces of the port body,
- wherein the struts of each band comprise longitudinal struts extending substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis and curved connectors connecting alternate ends of the longitudinal struts to define a zigzag pattern such that the zigzag pattern extends between the side edges of the port body, and
- wherein each band is unconnected to an adjacent band.
An access port attachable to a surface within a patient's body, comprising:
- a port body comprising flexible, nonporous elastomeric base material defining a first end, a second end, a longitudinal axis extending therebetween, and a substantially continuous wall including inner and outer surfaces without any openings and defining opposite side edges that extend uninterrupted between the first and second ends;
- and
- a plurality of elastic elements embedded in the port body, each elastic element comprising first and second ends located adjacent the opposite side edges and an intermediate region extending between the first and second ends, intermediate regions of the elastic elements being disposed adjacent one another and unconnected to adjacent intermediate regions such that the intermediate regions are separable to accommodate creating a passage through the port body when an instrument is introduced therethrough and resiliently biased to substantially close the passage to automatically substantially seal any passage created through the port body by a needle or other instrument.
An implantable graft, comprising:
- an elongate tubular graft including first and second ends and a graft lumen extending therebetween;
- an access port attached to an outer surface of a sidewall of the tubular graft, the access port comprising flexible and nonporous base material defining a first end, a second end, a longitudinal axis extending therebetween, and a continuous wall between the first and second ends including inner and outer surfaces without any openings defining opposite side edges that extend uninterrupted between the first and second ends, and a plurality of elastic elements embedded in the flexible base material, the elastic elements being movable relative to the base material to accommodate creating a passage through the access port when an instrument is introduced through the access port into the graft lumen and resiliently biased to substantially close the passage and self-seal to prevent fluid flow through the sidewall of the tubular graft fabric surround the inner and outer surfaces of the access port.
An access device for a tubular structure within a patient's body, comprising:
- a nonporous base material comprising a first end, a second end, a longitudinal axis extending therebetween, and a continuous wall having a “C” shaped cross-section and inner and outer surfaces without any openings extending between the first and second ends and defining opposite side edges extending between the first and second ends;
- a plurality of bands embedded in the base material, the bands unconnected to adjacent bands, each band comprising a plurality of struts including spaces therebetween, the struts being separable laterally within a plane of the wall to accommodate creating a passage through the base material when an instrument is introduced through the base material and resiliently biased to return laterally when the instrument is removed to substantially close the passage to automatically substantially seal any passage created through the port body by the instrument;
- and
- fabric covering the inner and outer surfaces of the base material comprising the plurality of bands.
