Enabling mobile computing devices to track data usage among mobile computing devices that share a data plan

A system, comprising:

• a memory unit for storing a computer program for enabling computing devices to track data usage among computing devices that share a data plan;
• and
• a processor coupled to the memory unit, wherein the processor is configured to execute the program instructions of the computer program comprising:
• receiving a threshold amount of data to be consumed by a plurality of devices belonging to said shared data plan;
• receiving a message from a first device of said plurality of devices belonging to said shared data plan;
• inspecting said message for an identifier that indicates that said message pertains to data usage information for said shared data plan;
• retrieving a set of metrics comprising a current data usage metrics from said message in response to identifying said identifier in said message from said first device;
• updating a value of aggregate data usage by said plurality of devices belonging to said shared data plan using said received set of metrics;
• and
• determining if said value of said aggregate data usage is within a designated amount of data usage to said threshold amount of data to be consumed by said plurality of devices belonging to said shared data plan.
