Abstract
A rice cultivar designated CL172 is disclosed. The invention relates to the seeds of rice cultivar CL172, to the plants of rice CL172, to methods for producing a rice plant produced by crossing the cultivar CL172 with itself or another rice variety, and to methods for controlling weeds in the vicinity of plants of rice cultivar CL172, which comprises increased resistance to acetohydroxyacid synthase-inhibiting herbicides. The invention further relates to hybrid rice seeds and plants produced by crossing the cultivar CL172 with another rice cultivar.
Claims41
A seed of rice cultivar CL172, wherein a representative sample of seed of said cultivar has been deposited under ATCC Accession No. PTA-121909.
A method of introducing a desired trait into rice cultivar CL172, wherein the method comprises:
- (a) crossing a CL172 plant, wherein a representative sample of seed was deposited under ATCC Accession No. PTA-121909, with a plant of another rice cultivar that comprises a desired trait to produce progeny plants, wherein the desired trait is selected from the group consisting of male sterility, herbicide resistance, insect resistance, abiotic stress tolerance, modified fatty acid metabolism, modified carbohydrate metabolism and resistance to bacterial disease, fungal disease or viral disease;
- (b) selecting one or more progeny plants that have the desired trait;
- (c) backcrossing the selected progeny plants with the CL172 plants to produce backcross progeny plants;
- (d) selecting for backcross progeny plants that have the desired trait;
- and
- (e) repeating steps (c) and (d) three or more times to produce selected fourth or higher backcross progeny plants that comprise the desired trait.
A method for controlling weeds in the vicinity of a rice plant of rice cultivar CL172, said method comprising applying an effective amount of at least one acetohydroxyacid synthase (AHAS)-inhibiting herbicide to the weeds and to the rice plant, wherein a representative sample of seed of said cultivar was deposited under ATCC Accession No. PTA-121909.
A seed of rice cultivar CL172, wherein said seed is treated with an AHAS-inhibiting herbicide, and wherein a representative sample of seed of said cultivar was deposited under ATCC Accession No. PTA-121909.
A method for combating undesired vegetation comprising contacting a seed of rice cultivar CL172 before sowing and/or after pregermination with an AHAS-inhibiting herbicide, wherein a representative sample of seed of said cultivar was deposited under ATCC Accession No. PTA-121909.
A method for producing an herbicide-resistant rice plant comprising crossing a first rice plant that is a rice plant of rice cultivar CL172 with a second rice plant that is not resistant to an herbicide, wherein a representative sample of seed of said cultivar was deposited under ATCC Accession No. PTA-121909.
A method for increasing the herbicide-resistance of a plant comprising crossing a first rice plant that is a rice plant of rice cultivar CL172 with a second rice plant, wherein a representative sample of seed of said cultivar was deposited under ATCC Accession No. PTA-121909.
