Abstract
Poly alpha olefins (PAOs) are characterized by very low viscosity and excellent Noack volatility. A preferred process for synthesizing said PAOs involves first oligomerizing low molecular weight linear alpha olefins in the presence of a single site catalyst at high temperatures without adding hydrogen and then subsequently oligomerizing at least a portion of the product from the first step in the presence of an oligomerization catalyst.
Claims10
A poly alpha olefin, wherein the poly alpha olefin has a kinematic viscosity at 100° C. of not more than 3.2 cSt, a Noack volatility of not more than 19 wt %, a pour point of less than −40° C., and has a portion having a carbon count of C28-C32 wherein the poly alpha olefin is hydrogenated, and prior to hydrogenation the C28-C32 portion of the poly alpha olefin is comprised of at least 10 wt % of tetra-substituted olefins.
A poly alpha olefin wherein the poly alpha olefin has a kinematic viscosity at 100° C. of not more than 4.1 cSt, a Noack volatility of not more than 9 wt %, and has a pour point of less than −50° C. wherein the poly alpha olefin is hydrogenated, and the poly alpha olefin comprises at least 10 wt % of poly alpha olefin produced by hydrogenating tetra-substituted olefins.
