Abstract
The present invention features methods for stimulating clearance of misfolded or aggregated proteins or peptides in microglia or neurons, and treating neurodegenerative diseases associated with such pathology in brain by selectively inhibiting the expression or activity of Acyl-CoA:Cholesterol Acyltransferase 1, but not Acyl-CoA:Cholesterol Acyltransferase 2.
Claims16
A method for stimulating clearance of misfolded or aggregated proteins and peptides in microglia or neurons comprising administering to a subject in need thereof an Acyl-CoA:Cholesterol Acyltransferase 1-selective inhibitor thereby stimulating clearance of the misfolded or aggregated proteins and peptides in microglia or neurons in the subject.
A method for treating a neurodegenerative disease associated with accumulation of misfolded or aggregated proteins or peptides in microglia or neurons of brain tissue comprising administering to a subject in need thereof an Acyl-CoA:Cholesterol Acyltransferase 1-selective inhibitor thereby decreasing the accumulation of misfolded or aggregated proteins or peptides in microglia or neurons of brain tissue in the subject, thereby treating the neurodegenerative disease.
